Yeah, the 1918 Surafend massacre by AoNZ troops has been conveniently disappeared from our military history. You won't see anything about it at Te Papa or the Waiouru Museum.

Their first massacre of unarmed civilians was at Rangiowhia in 1864.
The majority of other ANZAC massacres and war crimes occurred in foreign nations, fighting foreign imperial wars, defending foreign empires, out of sight and out of mind. 😡(Surafend etc.)

On 10 December 1918, in what became known as ‘The Surafend Incident’, New Zealand, Australian and British soldiers raided a Palestinian village named Sarafand al-Amar and killed about forty Arab civilians in retaliation for the murder of a New Zealand soldier. Scene shows soldiers gathered at Sarafand al-Amar. Archibald Baxter Archibald Baxter, Mark Briggs and two others also suffered the notorious Field Punishment: tied up in the open air with their hands cuffed behind their backs. And in February 1918 the army’s threat was carried out: they were sent to the trenches.

Can’t help noticing historical links between today’s military & Crown forces that waged war against Māori. Under different monikers, Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles fought for the Crown in the 1860s & helped subjugate Parihaka in 1881. Likely involved in the massacre at Surafend in 1918, too.
Excerpt from Stuff article published on 10 August 2025: Part of this has been the amalgamation of army units, such as moving mortars from the 16th field regiment into a battalion. One notable move is that King has decided the Queen Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles, a regiment dating back to 1864 which runs light armoured vehicles, will be merged with the First Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. Both are based at Linton, near Palmerston North. “I ruthlessly have to prioritise right now,” she says. The second step is the “future fighting concept”. “So where do we need to be in the future? How do we ensure that we are learning from what's happening in Ukraine, we are learning from technological advances and the likes?”
