Many languages, one notebook: Python (NumPy, SymPy, plots), R with ggplot2 and tidyverse, SWI-Prolog, Bash, JavaScript, Lua, TypR and ClojureScript.

Pick a language per cell; runtimes load when first used. Cells share files, so R can read what Python wrote. #rstats #python

Symbolic maths too: SymPy is preloaded, and results render as LaTeX.

A math palette inserts diff, integrate and solve, so there's less typing on a phone keyboard. Handy for coursework, checking working, or a quick derivation. #python #math

what's a Sympy villain?
October 22, 2026 at 4:10 PM
when having the model render stuff i basically just let it see all my work & then also give it a python venv that has torch, npy, scipy, sympy, pillow, matplotlib &c &c & let it do whatever w/ that

Sympy villains don't do much for me. It's about how much they entertain me, which is why I love me some campers. Miguel I assume is the former category and, no, didn't work on me.

Ours is the 24th. Sympy

Using SymPy to validate homework feels equally weird and rewarding.

Even with SymPy, Python evaluates literals like 0.1 + 0.2 or 1/3 to binary floats before SymPy sees them. For exact equality, pass strings or ints to SymPy Rational('0.1') + Rational('0.2') == Rational(3, 10) (or fractions.Fraction); for floats, use math.isclose.

I graded partial gold patches on 25 SWE-bench Verified sympy tasks. In 4, a half-fix passes every graded test yet behaves unlike gold: one keeps the exp_polar bug in polylog(1,z), one raises on infinite bounds. "Resolved" means the named tests pass, not that the issue is fixed.

I've internalised that test for == with floating point numbers is a bad idea.

Not sure if there's a better way though, short of using like sympy or something for the algebra

As Scott Steiner would put it: "No sympy."

sympy is pretty neat
October 3, 2026 at 11:25 PM
ok so actually if you do the math you get a^3b - 4a^2b + 8a = 0 and the llm that did it in sympy for me went and factored out a factor of "a" without fucking telling me about it and that means that the *actual* curve is also zeroed out along the line a=0 in addition to the quoted curve
ponder.ooo ponder @ponder.ooo · Sep 16
a²b - 4ab + 8 = 0
ponder.ooo ponder @ponder.ooo · Sep 16
what is this curve. do you know a function that happens to look like this, probably related in some way to quadratics
