FISH PEOPLE! Anyone know if Bay pipefish (Syngnathus leptorhynchus) exhibit any clear sexual dimorphism between males and females? Do females have ornaments? I'm having troubling finding this info in the primary literature.

#speciesaday no. 644 is Greater Pipefish (Syngnathus athus). This is the first one I have seen at The Pound, Eastbourne. Wil Heaney netted this youngster there last week. That's three species of pipefish I have seen there now.

... are born with a limited complement of immunity to any antigens the mother was exposed to.

In sygnathids, the female contributes the cell components, but then the offspring get immune priming FROM THE MALE, a process which increases the diversity of immune responses, producing fitter offspring.
Biparental immune priming in the pipefish Syngnathus typhle - PubMed
The transfer of immunity from parents to offspring (trans-generational immune priming (TGIP)) boosts offspring immune defence and parasite resistance. TGIP is usually a maternal trait. However, if fat...

I guess I should've gotten on this train earlier...

Howdy! I'm Drew. I study sexual selection, sex diversity, and sex-bias regulation mostly in fishes. I've mostly worked with pipefishes, cichilds, and gourami. I'm an NSF PRFB/ VAP at Reed College, but on the market for a permanent home.
