Here's Russian state media admitting that Assad's job was to make sure no pipelines went through Syria into Turkey so that all that cheaper Saudi and Qatari LNG never hurt Russia's gas monopoly, the one Putin lost anyway by invading Ukraine.

I don't know that much about Syria, I always from a cursory look went "Assad seems really bad." In the process, my analysis outperformed about 80% of people who comment on Syria.

Can’t believe he’s gone. I was in Syria, by coincidence when it started. I went back during the war and I hope with all my heart to go back to that wonderful country soon, at peace.
