Most early warning signals assume collapse shows up as rising variance or autocorrelation. But what if that's only true for one class of mechanisms? The Compression-Response Transition Index (CRTI) introduces a mechanism-specific approach: it combines recovery dynamics (R) with covariance geometry (Ф) and includes an explicit validity condition (Structural-Dynamic Separability, SDS). The left quadrant contains classical cybernetic approaches, particularly the Law of Requisite Variety proposed by W. Ross Ashby and the Viable System Model developed by Stafford Beer. The upper region refers to theories of resilience and adaptive dynamics, including the ecological resilience framework of C. S. Holling and concepts of self-organization described by Stuart Kauffman. The right quadrant represents fragility- and risk-oriented perspectives on complex systems, such as the work of Nassim Nicholas Taleb and Charles Perrow. At the center of the diagram lies the concept of Structural Over-Order, also referred to as the Mallinckrodt Axiom. This hypothesis suggests that complex systems may fail not only due to chaos or insufficient order, but also due to excessive structural optimization. When optimization compresses internal variance and suppresses environmental resonance, adaptive capacity declines and systemic fragility may emerge.
