#TCJA
he's actually right about this, letting the TCJA tax cuts lapse would also be catastrophic for the GOP
CNN: Why do you think it's so unpopular? This is underwater by 20 or 30 points

JIM JORDAN: What would be unpopular is letting taxes go up on families we get the privilege of representing. Right now there's polling out there that says whatever.

I mean, I think the tariff stuff is impairing their ability to *even* get TCJA renewal done
another thing that bears repeating is that i bet people's expectations for government response to a recession are extremely high (CARES/HEROES) and we are just *not* getting that

Until the TCJA, the top 400 US individuals by wealth and the full US population both had effective tax rates of ~30%. The TCJA reduced the Top 400 individuals’ total effective tax rates to 23.8% in 2018 – 2020, well below those of the full population (still ~30%).

The proposed Senate budget resolution would add almost 4x more to the debt than the first TCJA and 3x more than Biden’s covid-relief bill.

TCJA 2 is going to be such a nightmare
November 18, 2024 at 7:16 PM
i mean my god in 2017 they hadn't even passed the TCJA!
July 31, 2025 at 6:02 PM
i genuinely don't know if they can get a TCJA renewal across the line

the gop proposal for the child tax credit is evil.

before tcja, parents w/ kids could get it. in tcja, they required the kid be a citizen.

now they’d require both parents be citizens. unless they’re unmarried - then if one’s a citizen they can get it.

punishing kids - and a divorce incentive

It's sort of funny how the big TCJA increase in the standard deduction makes stories framed around "not itemizing deductions to charity" not make any sense.
What is this framing my times?!

Repeal the TCJA, 37% top marginal rate, and 100,000 new cops*

They somehow will come up with a money bill less popular than TCJA
February 2, 2025 at 8:08 AM
That "Extend TCJA rates" at the top -- those are the massive tax cuts for the super rich
I read Trump + Senate Republicans' "One Big Beautiful Bill" so you don't have to.

It came out at *midnight* & we're still getting numbers in from Congress's bookkeepers.

Early returns:
Nearly $1 TRILLION in Medicaid cuts.

Happy Saturday. Follow for more.

It's basically eviler TCJA and a near equivalent to an ACA repeal. And plenty of both the senate and house conference think it'll be *popular*
July 1, 2025 at 5:27 PM
like Trump's team is convinced they have the mandate of heaven to remake the US,

we're probably going to get a reconciliation bill that's like half TCJA, half smoot-hawley and the original TCJA was so unpopular it lost them 40 house seats — this isn't even touching what they do the economy
November 15, 2024 at 12:14 AM
Yeah. They're terrified of this going down and the TCJA expiring.

idk what to say about this, it seems pretty clear that Murkowski made the decision that extending the TCJA outweighed all other concerns, and because the OBBB would go down in flames if she voted no and it would be unclear how to extend the TCJA, she voted yes.
Another rather wild statement from Murkowski — who provides no explanations as to why she accepted the premise of the deadline if she found it so preposterous. She could have just said I'm a firm no until we figure this stuff out in a month!

yeah you can really tell that TCJA was Paul Ryan's baby
April 6, 2025 at 1:07 AM
forbidden knowledge on this site: we should keep and expand full expensing from the TCJA

I hope democrats make passing their TCJA renewal as painful as possible
I really hope we can shake the idea that helplessness is savvy in the next couple years
November 20, 2024 at 12:22 AM
It's hard to overstate how stupid every element of the tax bill is. For all its faults, TCJA had some reasonable elements like the bigger standard deduction. This time it's pure slop policy from start to finish.
May 22, 2025 at 2:53 AM
Either the extension of the TCJA is a continuation of tax breaks, or it isn’t.
You can’t argue that it “saves” taxpayers additional money (calculating savings as if it would have expired) and then argue there’s no change to the deficit (because you’re using the TCJA as a baseline).

NEW from me at MSNBC: The wildly irresponsible GOP tax bill:
- Costs more than the 2017 TCJA, 2020 CARES Act and 2021 American Rescue Plan - Combined.

- Is a special interest bonanza that won't help economy.

- Spends $52B bailing out farmers.

- Is already raising interest rates.
May 25, 2025 at 11:10 PM
COLLINS: What economists that Republicans have heard from have told you this bill will not add to the deficit?

MARKWAYNE MULLIN: Well, the same economists that you're referring to said the TCJA was gonna add $1.5t in deficits

(That's a long way of saying "none")

reupping the TCJA taxes has really put the Republicans in a rough position because they’re going to deliver nearly no goodies with their shit sandwich
