Do you love TDEs/ transients in general, and potentially living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest? I’m hiring a postdoc! Come work with me! 🔭🧪🎢

Early Christmas present- our proposal was accepted on XMM-Newton (the ESA space telescope)!!! We’ll be looking at the oldest-known cases of TDEs- black holes that shredded stars- discovered in the 1990s by the ROSAT satellite!

Thanks, Europe! 🥳🤩🛰️🔭🧪

welcome @gymleadererica.bsky.social to bsky !! Dr. Erica is a postdoc @ UC Berkeley in the TRex group working on tidal disruption events (TDEs) and their host galaxies !! give her a follow !!

nice story on tidal dusruption events (TDEs, where a black hole eats a star and then burps), by @whereisyvette.bsky.social, in the july/august issue of scientific american @sciam.bsky.social 🔭👍🏼⭐⚫

NEW PAPER: I have discovered that up to half of all black holes that shred a star "burp" material years after the initial event and turn on in radio!!! No one was expecting this, and we don't really understand why this might be! 🤩🔭🧪

Ubiquitous Late Radio Emission from Tidal Disruption Events
We present radio observations of 23 optically-discovered tidal disruption events (TDEs) on timescales of about 500-3200 days post-discovery. We detect 9 new TDEs that did not have detectable radio...

Chandra proposal submitted!!! Hopefully we are successful and get X-rays from some weird late-time TDEs! 🔭🤩🥳🛰️🧪

The funny thing is I’ve never actually submitted a Chandra proposal for the regular deadline (only DDTs). Your heartbeat def increases more on a new telescope as the hour approaches. 🤪

Of our 24 TDEs, *ten* turned on in radio hundreds of days after the star was torn apart! We also found two TDEs that had radio detections soon after the initial event, faded, and re-brightened- indicating up to half of all TDEs are turning on years after the fact!

Dust might be responsible for hiding many tidally disrupted stars from view — but a new search at infrared wavelengths has revealed them at last. aasnova.org/2024/12/27/s... 🔭🧪

At the KITP meeting on tidal disruption events (TDEs), and decided to start a poll of the audience. I’ll post an update tomorrow once voting is done! 🔭

Here's an example of two relativistic jets from supermassive black holes from an observation of mine using the MeerKAT telescope- note, these aren't caused by TDEs, just by stray dust falling onto the SMBH. But they are tens of thousands of light years across, and IMO quite pretty! 🤩
