overnor Greg Abbott directed the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) to take several actions that put consumers first and make property and casualty insurance more affordable for Texans who invest in their homes.

The Supreme Court of Texas heard argument in case no. 250461 involving Ace American Insurance Company over whether an insurance-policy appraisal clause must be enforced when valuation questions are interwoven with coverage issues such as mold remediation, code compliance and causation.

A default judgment granted policy-limit and additional awards in Nelson v. Pizarro/Palmer after the insurer denied coverage; plaintiff argued the family-purpose doctrine and sought policy limits and attorney fees; the court awarded $25,000 to the plaintiff, $5,000 for a minor, and $10,000 in fees.

Insurers must update credit scores and policy ratings every 36 months under new law.
