“In less than two weeks I will have been an editor for 22 years. This project works because we all work, and especially because a small group of paid workers help make it work for everyone else. They deserve better than this, much better. In solidarity.” – Jessamyn

I adored her. TTMB is one of my comfort programmes.

Same. Both shows are great. I own TTMB have wanted TGL forever. Need to look for her other series. Watching TTMB right now.

Such a special actress who created memorable characters and made us believe in and love them, however absurd or pompous they were. A friend and I still share jokes based on TTMB. I was fortunate to see her in Good Grief at the Alhambra in Bradford in 1998. RIP Penelope.
The Queen of the 1970s, an absolute tour de force. Started off with lowest billing on The Good Life but became the standout star of the era. An incredible woman. Go well, Penelope.

TTMB is one of my favourite programmes ever.

Oh damn Pen Keith. RIP. No-one did hoity-toity quite like her. (tGL and ttMB).

He was a far more versatile actor. My grandad had fond memories of working with him. The thing is before TTMB, he was 'foreign villain'.

Today's tunes - the most random but most awesome find: Trek Lofi Jazz. What I now like to refer to as United Federation of Jazz.

TTMB got huge ratings at the time, but even at the time (as a teenager) I didn't think it was very good. I suspect the high ratings were mainly due to P Keith being in it.

Smooth Trek vibes featuring loungy versions of the Alpha Quadrants’ most recognizable transmissions. Thanks to all the composers that shaped the soundtrack of these shows. Music made with help from…

TTMB slides off my memory so quickly that I had to google what those initials meant, despite it being the trigger for the whole thread.

No memorable catchphrases? TTMB was big, I enjoyed it when first shown but didn’t get the ‘undercurrent’ whereas Dad’s Army was full of things like “Don’t panic” “We’re doomed” and “Stupid boy” that stuck in the public’s mind, OFAH was similar “Plonker” “This time next year” and “Dave”

I rewatched TTMB Christmas special a few years ago. It was crap! I really like Penelope Keith, but the script was just flabby.
Whereas both FT and TGL were just... better (imo, ymmv etc,)

I'm thinking obviously less about UK-specific impact and more about general anglosphere staying power. It's not that TTMB is mysteriously British-specific and about the class system - this is said of Keeping Up Appearances, which has staying power and int'l reach.

As maybe the only Canadian-American to have literally published on TTMB in recent years, I have thoughts!
Interesting how so many people watched To The Manor Born but it has had a much smaller impact on the cultural memory of this country when compared to other sitcoms from a similar time like Fawlty Towers or The Good Life.
Chelsea will play Leeds in the FA Cup semifinal. Their 1970 FA Cup final replay may well never be overtaken as the biggest audience for a club football match in Britain. It was seen by a very similar number of people - 28.5 million - as the moon landing the previous year

I always get TTMB and The Good Life confused. Which one was parodied in The Young Ones?
April 5, 2026 at 8:28 PM
I really enjoyed TTMB and I rewatched the whole lot during Covid, but the only line I can think of from it is "We have a saying in old Czechoslovakia" – it had a more gentle pace and less obviously grotesque caricatures and less visual humour, which I think all makes it harder to imprint in culture.
April 5, 2026 at 8:27 PM
Did they?
I'm sure it was great but I don't remember any such show.
I remember TTMB being pretty dull.
I think I watched a couple of episodes.
April 5, 2026 at 7:57 PM
Not that I watch or follow TTMB all that closely but I would have never expected any Grant McCasland team to get beat the way they did today in a tournament game. I'll always pull for the guy after what he was able to do in little ol Denton.
