I’m so grateful to be the new Chair for The Writers’ Union of Canada (TWUC). It’s been a really rough year or two w/ my mobility declining while I wait for leg and hip surgery, so I feel especially glad to have met so many Canadian authors (and new friends) through my volunteer work w/ TWUC.❤️🇨🇦🙏

Well, now. That’s a nice way to start an afternoon.

Thanks to The Writers' Union Of Canada 🇨🇦 (TWUC) for making webinar "A Guide To Taxes For Writers" free to members. Lots of great info from Michelle Elrick & @thegreatwriter.bsky.social. Watched via my #AppleVisionPro, taking notes throughout. Recorded/edited this short video entirely in my AVP.

I'm very curious to see the answers to these... I used to belong to a couple of writing organizations (SFWA, my locals WGA and TWUC) but I found that I just... was not using what they were offering and/or wasn't eligible for the offers.

This is the thing. Neither the Authors Guild nor The Writers’ Union of Canada will engage honestly with this point, despite all their noisy advocacy. Licensing doesn’t magically cancel out gen”AI”’s unethical origins and pushing licensing as the AG & TWUC are doing is disingenuous at best
Using generative AI, even for memes, normalizes an ethically abhorrent technology. The content that was scraped to make your meme (the photos of the president, the art of the MTG cards, the music for your song) were made by human creatives who have not and will never be fairly compensated for it.

TWUC members—check out this new program!

You don't have to be a TWUC member to sign, but you do have to be Canadian

Adding my voice to those denouncing TWUC statement about being “cautiously optimistic” about AI rights deals.

“It’s here to stay so we might as well let them do it” is as uncritical as it is lazy.
