‘Everywhere we stand, we are probably standing on dead bodies.’ How Tadamon was turned into an industrial killing field by militias loyal to Bashar al-Assad during Syria’s 13-year civil war. www.ft.com/content/da42...
DAMASCUS, SYRIA - DECEMBER 12: A pile of bones on the floor of a ruined building on December 12, 2024 in the Tadamon suburb of Damascus, Syria. The Tadamon district of Damascus has been an active battleground in Syrian civil war that began in 2011, held briefly by Free Syrian Army rebels and then partly by Islamic State forces, before being recaptured by government forces in 2018. This part of Tadamon was reportedly controlled by the Syrian National Defense Forces (NDF), a pro-government paramilitary organization accused of persecuting and killing civilians. In 2013, Tadamon was the site of a massacre of at least 41 civilians by government soldiers affiliated with Branch 227 of the Military Intelligence Directorate. A video of that event was eventually leaked and received widespread publicity in 2022. Rebel forces regained control of the capital last week after a lightning offensive against the regime of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad. (Photo by Ali Haj Suleiman/Getty Images)
