It is a unit of measurement by weight, though what precise weight varied by region. And maybe (according to this South China Morning Post article), the word came to Portuguese by way of Malay (tahil) by way of Hindi (tolā) by way of Sanskrit (tulā).

Today I discovered that "tael" is in Merriam-Webster (while copyediting an academic book on Chinese literature). So, it should not be italicized, since it's a loanword.

But it's not originally Chinese. It's borrowed from from Portugese and the OED has it first attested in 1588.

They even took the giant robots out of it, which is a truly baffling decision

First thing I wanna say is I'm now really happy about my choice to name the protagonist after Tatl and Tael from Majora's Mask, because it seems they'll spend a chunk of the game taking on the form of a bird to gently guide the other main characters, which is kinda like what fairies in Zelda do :v
The menu when you interact with a Perch, a place where the Pale Raven, in the form of a white bird, will sit and can be interacted with. The options in the menu are "Feed Pale Raven", "Foresight", "Obelisk Chamber", "Notable Deeds", "Boons of Salvation", and "Restart Chapter". "Feed Pale Raven" is currently highlighted, with text saying, "Deepen your bond with the Pale Raven. (Increases support points with Tatltael in the form of the Pale Raven.)" At the bottom-left of the screen is the current in-game date and time, current objective, current location, number of turns left, and the time of the next main story event. Perfect Bird Time! When a character feeds the Pale Raven, a minigame occurs in which the character says things to the Pale Raven, and you, as the bird, must select responses that appeal to them, such as nodding or staring intently. In a gameplay sense, this is essentially 3 multiple-choice responses to what's said, and if you pick favorable responses all 3 times, you've achieved Perfect Bird Time. Below the "Perfect Bird Time" text, a smaller message says, "Support points with Tatltael increased greatly." A tutorial message titled "Foresight", which says the following: "Important battles over the course of the story are called main battles. You can get advance information about these battles at the perch." Not seen in this screenshot, the message continues with the following: "This information will contain advice on your ideal level, effective weapon types, and more. Use this to master the battlefield." An infographic describing the next main battle. Information about who you're fighting or why are not displayed, but enemy locations are. Various information can be seen, such as the ideal level, class tier, and weapon tier to be up to by the time you fight this battle. A section is titled "Advice", and in this case, it says the following: "You seem to be up against a mob of mostly melee types. Pepper them from afar with bows, magic, and so forth, and your victory will be certain."
