#WIPSnips 27. “Moth”

We have Mileena again—in happier circumstances, for a change.

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters
“Sensitivity. Personal will. Psychic powers.” From the little Mileena knew of the ambassador, that fit well. “And good luck. We all need that sometimes.” Mileena met Tanya’s eyes, and she knew she shouldn’t stare, that it could put the ambassador in trouble if someone saw them and thought she was defying the princess. Yet those eyes shone brighter than the yellow and orange flowers surrounding the carriage, and like a moth lured to the light, knowing it would burn her but unable to resist, Mileena found it impossible to avert her gaze. The tòtái carrying their vehicle shrieked, and Tanya broke contact to look ahead. “We’re almost there.” “Finally,” Manyamo groaned.

#AwesomeCharacters Well, Sareena will adopt one. Or, more precisely, one will adopt Sareena!

Not a normal dog, that would be boring. A hellhound! 😈

(Dog-like traits? Mileena has no lips, so she licks Tanya to kiss her 😄💜)

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #NetherTouchedSareena #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena
Sareena, from Chronicles of the Realms, made in the Gothic Heroine character maker (link: https://www.dolldivine.com/gothic-heroine). She's inside a castle, wearing dark red and black clothes mixing a Gothic with an Indian style, holding a dagger in her left hand while black claws protrude from her right fingers. She has her usual mischievous expression. Behind her stands a hellhound of shadows with bright yellow eyes and muzzle.

Oh, wow: this is the FIRST time that a Mortal Kombat fan interacts with CotR 😅
Seems like I'm in luck, too, as judging by the comment and their own stories, they seem like someone who genuinely cares about the characters, particularly Taleena, and the lore, and gods know how f** rare that's become.
Comment by Marquise_de_Outworld on Ao3: I really love this. You have a wonderful imagination and writerly talent. I'm so jealous of your toponym creativity and diacritics. Agh! I wish I had read this sooner, it would have improved my own dark fantasy naming methods ten times over! Alas! The initial dialogue between Mileena and Tanya was absolutely electric. The subsequent interaction with Kitana in the Cricket Garden? A true sibling moment replete with all the adorable and sardonic elements of sisterhood that come with it! This world is so vibrant, so alive. At times, it sort of feels like I'm reading Le Guin, but not a Wizard of Earthsea. More like something from her Hainish Cycle. It's *that* inventive. That special. “I’m sorry,” she croaked out, her voice as raspy and otherworldly as when she was an untrained sprout, a spawn of the Hells, and she all but ran away while Tanya called her name. This scene was just so well executed, and it makes the concluding "All I see is you" so remarkably sweet. Thank you so much for composing this lovely text!

#WIPSnips 15. “Coach”

Mileena and Tanya prepare to set off on a wee trip.

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters
As quickly as she could, she changed her clothes, then teleported back out. Sweating and panting after the magical and physical effort, she found the coach already waiting for her in the Fire Garden, in the back rows of the palace. Girdled by palm leaves, a rooftop embellished with yellow apricots, and pulled by a tòtái, it was clearly a wealthy carriage, but not associated with the empire. As she requested. The two guards and the driver bowed when she approached, and one opened the door for her. The tòtái wiggled its three tails made of càn lán, a flower with urn-shaped petals and serrated margins. Mileena giggled—to the discomfort of the guard waiting at the door—and petted the animal’s grassy, triangular face. She could swear it grinned at her, but then tòtái always seemed to be smiling—either in genuine amusement or quiet scorn, she was not sure. Tanya smiled when she entered, and this smile Mileena could tell was sincere, for it touched her heart. When the door closed, Mileena dropped to the seat with a sigh. Then, the ambassador took the princess’ hand and kissed it, her lips gentle and warm. “Having a good morning, buttercup?” “Better now.”

In Eternal Flame, the only main relationship we have is between Mileena and Tanya (desperately need art of them), who are an already established couple (there's a short story that shows how they got together, though).

What I love about it is (1/4)

Animals are, indeed, far smarter.

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters
Near a small waterfall, a family of red-faced monkeys feasted on guava trees. The biggest of the group screeched at the two visitors, the petals of red clematis on its eyes—the whole reason for their name—opening as widely as they would go, and clutched two fruits close to its chest. Mileena hissed in response, but if the animal feared her sharp teeth or her elongated tongue, it did a brilliant job of hiding it. “Not even they respect me!” she griped to Tanya, though it was a light-hearted complaint. For a long time now, she had the theory that animals were far smarter than Edenians, and time and time again, she was proven right. “I’m sure they have enough rage in that little body of theirs to beat us both in combat.”

#LGBTQWriteAThon 7. “Lovers”

A meet-cute of sorts: they've interacted before, but this is the first time Mileena will be “alone” with Tanya.

Also, we have a namedrop that #Juniplex folks will find familiar.

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters
Located on the west hills that circled the Golden Palace, Ânmári’s Orchard was a garden cultivated by the Goddess of the Moon, Tides, and Madness herself alongside her consort, Sánhâo, Goddess of the Stars, Forgetfulness, and Inspiration, after they gave birth to Aphásiés, who had inherited the celestial beauty of her mothers but none of their flair for the romantic. The orchard had become a favourite spot for lovers across the realm, but because of the latent magic in that stretch of land, it had also become the perfect spot for an Evergreen Gate, one of those mossy portals that connected distant and important areas across the realm—and even some very special places beyond it. And that was where Princess Mileena met Ambassador Tanya Dhalwabi, a dash of orange and yellow amidst the sky-blue and sapphire of the closed moonflowers, her white pupils like two fireflies. A pendant of brown, polished rocks complemented the earthy tone of her dóen'dam and the dán thuan that flapped behind her. Triangular metal plates with a yellow jewel in the middle decorated her ankles like armour pieces, but Mileena knew they were actually an emblem of her people. Taproots branched off her arms, a distinct trait of her race, the běr’úngo. Upon seeing the princess, Tanya gave her the smile that many had described as captivating—and Mileena found it hard to disagree, even if having such attention upon herself made her want to burrow into the earth and deal with Ânmári’s wrath later.

#WIPSnips 3. "Nectar"

From All I See Is You:

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena #LesFic #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters
“Your Highness looks even more beautiful tonight.” She bowed, her eyes never leaving Mileena’s. Even more beautiful? Poor, innocent Tanya. It was true that Mileena had chosen one of her fanciest dóen’dam for tonight, one with an entire forest woven into the skirt and shell-shaped motifs on the chest. She had wanted to look pretty, like a plant that produced more nectar so that it would attract—she cringed at her own thoughts, nearly biting her tongue off, and before the ambassador could notice anything, she blurted out, “And the Royal Ambassador’s dress is… very elegant. It matches all the, you know, the flowers.” Her bumbling response only increased her desire to teleport away from there and into the farthest tree she could reach, but all Tanya did was give her the smile that, until now, Mileena hadn’t realised how much she had missed in the two days she hadn’t seen the ambassador around. “Would Your Highness care to accompany me to the bonfire, so that I may place my offering?” “Uh, of course. And ambassador?” She half-turned. “You can call me Mileena. If you want to.” Tanya beamed, and Mileena’s heart thudded painfully against her chest. “Only if Your Highness calls me Tanya.” With a nod from Mileena, Tanya gestured towards the bonfire, and they walked there side-by-side.

#WIPSnips 31. "Room"

Mileena visits Tanya's room in the Golden Palace... but no, this isn't a romantic snippet!

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters
Scrolls scattered across the floor, pages torn from books. Shelves emptied, one overturned. Broken glass, ripped fabric, and even a sword-shaped leaf of a steelroot broken and left to wither as if it were nothing. “Tanya…” Mileena sniffed for blood. Relief came out in a shaky breath when she smelt only wood, chlorophyll, and sweat. Not Tanya’s, but of those who had been here last. This had not been an attack, though. Someone must have been searching for something with enough desperation to not bother hiding their mess. Once more, Mileena put her nose to work. As she shifted through the scents, she detected more layers to those she had first identified. Beneath the sweat lay buried the stink of metal and, hiding beneath it, almost too faint for her to notice, the powdery trail of magic. She tried to identify whom those might belong to but could not, not by smell alone, and not with her mind heavy with worry. Going around the room, she caught traces of Tanya as well in places she spent the most time in: the chair, the table now partially destroyed by the fallen shelf, and in a specific portion of another shelf whose books and scrolls sat in a messy heap below it.

I grew out of liking Taleena. Its one of those things where a character was made into something they aren't just to make it work. I loathe MK11 for making it canon.

Mileena and Tanya are going on a wee adventure together :3

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters
She met Tanya on the vûgió Abode west of the palace, and she, too, had chosen a more casual outfit. The creatures, both already tacked up, blinked at the princess as she made her way through the pasture. “Your Highness,” the ambassador crossed her hands and tipped her head. “I took the liberty of saddling your vûgió for you.” “And Mínsên let you?” Mínsên let out an outraged screech. Tanya laughed. “She has been nothing but a sweetheart. And I believe she made friends with Akũi already.” A yellow-and-white vûgió stood tall and proud beside Mileena’s pink-and-purple companion. They… did look good together, she had to admit. “Thank you, ambassador.”

A digital illustration of Ashrah and Nitara, from Chronicles of the Realms, by Seph (@goethial.bsky.social‬). It depicts the two characters back to back, holding hands, as they prepare for another fight, Ashrah brandishing Datusha, her sentient, keris-shaped sword, and Nitara summoning her dark magic. One of Nitara's wings stands behind Ashrah, almost like a shield, while the other is behind Nitara herself, in shadows. Nitara is about a head and half taller than Ashrah.

Manyamo has a theory on how dóankhi is made… 😶

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters
Mileena squinted at the ambassador. “You visited Achalma? Achalma, the Underwater Kingdom?” Tanya crossed one leg over the other and spread her arms over the back of the seat, a proud smile on her lips. “The one and only.” “Chákê, you’re messing with me!” “I’m not!” “What’s Achalma like, then?” “Much like Dueóng or any other big city, honestly. Just underwater and with more fish than people.” Tanya leant in, one hand covering one side of her mouth. “And I learnt how dóankhi is made.” “How?” Mileena jumped at the chance to learn the formula that so many Edenians had tried to replicate, always unsuccessful. If she could make her own dóankhi, well… she’d be a much happier princess! Her plans went out of the carriage when Tanya moved away with a grimace. “It’s better for your personal enjoyment that you don’t know.” “I bet it’s milk from tǎi’nùn’s tits,” Manyamo chose that moment to remind them that she was listening to every single word. The two dĩn'huei stared at the Abuurgan. Then the three of them broke into hysterical, indecorous laughter.

#WIPSnips 23. “Lily”

Tanya asks Mileena about her heart flower, and… well, it’s a tricky question. Plus (a little) more Manyamo!

From All I See Is You: archiveofourown.org/works/65809396.

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #QueerWriters
“What is Your Highness’ heart flower?” Distracted by the sights, Mileena startled at the ambassador’s voice. “M-mine?” “Yes. If Your Highness wishes to share it with me, of course.” Mileena swallowed drily. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to tell Tanya. The problem was… she didn’t have one. Heart flowers were those a dĩn’huei felt a stronger connection with, above all the others; the one that grew on the right side of their chests. But flowers didn’t grow naturally on the princess. The demonic half of her soul wouldn’t let it, her mother said. “Lily of the Valley,” she blurted out and immediately cringed. Manyamo had the decency to turn her big, stupid face away before giving in to a grin. “Embrace your nature, self-acceptance, life purpose,” Tanya listed the soul essence of the flower, and Mileena wanted to throw herself off the carriage. It wasn’t her heart flower, of course, but the one she wished it was. And gods only knew what the ambassador was thinking of what had essentially been a confession of the demon within her. “An excellent heart flower, Your Highness.” She looked out into the cornfields beyond the palace. “Finding one’s life purpose is not as easy as we are led to believe.”

Another romantic one today 🥰

#ChroniclesOfTheRealms #MileenaSuêòng #Taleena
Mileena pointed at her head. “There’s some pink in your hair.” Still humming, Tanya touched the flowers that had grown amidst her black tresses: half a dozen petals of bright pink hawthorn. Sacred unity, protection. But also duality. “Not even they want to get near me.” She stared at the dĩ’nay moving in perfect synchrony, their trunks becoming a blur the farther the carriage travelled. “No flowers for the princess, I guess.” Tanya plucked the petals from her scalp and inspected them. “I think they suit you much better than they do me. Maybe they didn’t give you any flowers because they wanted us to share these.” She leaned forward, offering Mileena three of the six flowers. “So they can see we are united, just the way they like it.”
