Thin tree trunks line a brown dirt trail. Light fog between the trees adds an effect of lightening the picture. Thin scraggly rhododendron bushes are to either side of the trail which curves slightly left through the trees. Evergreen trees have thin branches starting 6 feet in the air.Two tree trunks are slightly thicker, coming into the picture in the left side leaning left to right. The sun is hitting trees and bushes to the left of the photo while bushes to the right of the photo are still in shadow. The trail is snow covered into the distance. Nearby trees have no low branches. An evergreen tree with head height branches shows itself behind the older trees. By looking at the Rhododendron leaves, you can tell that the temperature is well in the 40°F range to 50°F range as they are well open and only slightly drooping.

The left side and bottom of the photo image contain rocks at a slight diagonal upwards. Beyond these a row of jagged, Evergreen trees point to the sky. Between two sets of evergreen trees points, a rock emerging from the greenery by itself at the same angle as the rest of the rocks in the picture. And evergreen tree tops the picture and finishes out the left side. Wild blueberry bushes and other small vegetation are mixed on the left side of the picture in the distance. A gentle curve of grandfather Mountain rises center of picture to the right. Gray rock emerges in some spots with steep stone faces that defy vegetation. The top of the mountain is darker with Evergreen trees, while the lower slopes are covered with deciduous trees. An “s” shaped curve of the Linn Cove Viaduct of the Blue Ridge Parkway way can be seen snaking across the mountain. The sky is a deep midday blue with starkly white clouds, small and close to the mountain.

Note to self: An easier way to visit this rock formation in the future would be to hike Rough Ridge and then turn right onto the Tanawha trail, and walk 10 minutes. Not hike from the Linn Cove parking lot.
The bottom of the picture shows moderate and large sized pieces of rock angled upward. Years of dirt have settled between the rocks. About the middle of the picture the rocks become very angular and sheets of layered rock positioned nearly horizontally. The sheets of layered rock are stacked on top of one another in places with 90° corners near the top. Some of the corners are broken, but the sheets of rock are stacked to form a very tall column. The effect at the top of the rock is as if there are thick pieces of paper jumbled in a stack, not neat and straightened . The rock extends outward forming a shaded area. Beside the rock column on either side are moderate sized trees with deciduous green leaves. The top of the rock formation is visually blocked by some of the deciduous leaves. Light filters through the picture from a source of the sun shining from the left side.
