Witches' broom galls on Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) in Palatine, Co. Carlow recently. Likely caused by Taphrina carpini but phytoplasmas can cause similar broom symptoms.

There's also a belief that these disorderly plant structures are "good luck", so if you spot one, lucky you (probably not as lucky for the tree)!

Die rosarote Farbe wird durch Carotinoide verursacht, die vermutlich als Sonnenschutz für Taphrina deformans dienen. Bekämpft werden kann der Pilz durch spritzen mit Fungizid im Jänner - März, vor dem Knospenaufsprung.
