This is the famous Venezuelan Poodle Moth (Artace sp.), a distinctively fluffy, white insect w/ prominent bulbous dark eyes and feathery antennae.

First photographed in 2009 by Arthur Anker in the Gran Sabana region of Venezuela. Its exact taxonomic classification remains debated by entomologists.

Your taxonomic post of the day
The Hoff Crab is neither a crab nor is it David Hasselhoff. It is a Yeti Crab, which is neither a Yeti nor a Crab but a sub-group of Squat Lobsters, which are not lobsters, they're Anomurans, like Mole Crabs, which are neither moles, nor crabs.

Taxonomic outrage is valid.
For the last time:

“Elasmobranchs” are sharks, skates, and rays.

“Chondrichthyans” are sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras.

These terms are not interchangeable. Stop using them interchangeably!

There is taxonomy & field work crisis in palaeontology, with new generations of palaeontologists pressed for mass data and methodology research, removed from taxonomic & geological work ergo primary data collection.

There's a stigma on purely taxonomic research. The bread-n-butter of the field.
"Extinction of experience" in disciplines like ecology & paleobiology isn't just about fieldwork. It's also the loss of taxonomic expertise. Any focus on Big Data, divorced from knowledge of natural history, is a largely vacuous enterprise with limited capacity to generate meaningful insights. 🧪

This is the Sunburst Candy Spider from Thailand. Not AI (sucks to have to declare this). Very real and had been on my wish list for a long time.

The taxonomic placement is unclear, so we are leaving it at Cyrtarachninae.

Few better illustrate the taxonomic uncertainties of “basal passerid oscines” than the Satinbirds. Long considered birds-of-paradise, their unique characteristics have earned them their own family.

Among them is the striking Crested Satinbird, a result of recent taxonomic lumping!
