Toilet paper is a relatively new invention. Ancient Romans preferred to use tersorium, a natural sponge tied to a stick and soaked in vinegar. 🧪
What Ancient Romans Used Instead of Toilet Paper
It was an ingenious little device.

Saviez-vous que les Romains utilisaient des latrines communes et partageaient le même ustensile, le tersorium, pour se torcher et que l'évasion fiscale en France coûte entre 80 à 100 milliards d'euros à l'Etat.

Sic Semper Tersorium. Literally, "wiping thing". Metaphorically "those butt sponges romans used because three-ply hadn't been invented yet"

Starożytni Rzymianie w publicznych latrynach nie mieli papieru toaletowego, ale używali „tersorium” do wycierania tyłków. „Tersorium” było wspólnym kijem z przymocowaną gąbką nasączoną octem lub wodą z solą.

#OTD 25 Dec –Romans celebrated #SolInvictus the “unconquered sun” 🌞 In AD274 Aurelian dedicated a temple, elevated the priesthood, & held games every 4 years. Patron of the #RomanLegions, the day saw drinking, chariot races & revelry. Harry’s celebrating at Trimontium — tersorium at the ready! 😸

I love that one of the vignettes of life in Alexandria in Agora (2009) shows three characters sitting in a Roman-style latrine, one of whom is idly holding the tersorium (sponge on a stick).

If the xylospongium or tersorium was used for wiping the backside, cleaning the latrine or something else is unknown, historians still debate it's function but there's no real evidence for it's actual purpose.

Spinning off her comment in the fourth screen shot, I googled "vinegar soaked sponges for toilet paper" and confirmed it--the Latin word is "tersorium".

It does not *seem* to be the origin of the person giving Jesus a sponge soaked in vinegar in all the canonical Gospels, but maybe it was?
(Please note Shep’s pronouns have changed since this was written)
