#Tesem
Now, the oldest known named pets. In the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu (c. 2566 BCE) there is a carving of a "Tesem" (hunting dog), named Akbaru.
In a relief dated to circa 2400 BCE there is a dog called Beha.
And in the tomb of Puimre, priest under Thutmose III (15th century BCE), appears Nedjem the cat.

Senbi served under Pharaohs Neferhotep I and Sobekhotep IV. His tomb tells us little about his family—but a lot about his dog. A Tesem, elegant and loyal, immortalized in a scene where Senbi calms two fighting bulls. The dog watches. The bond is eternal.

The Pharaoh Hound has a name so perfect it feels engineered by a marketing office with direct access to the pyramids. And the myth is irresistible: upright ears, sleek profile, sandy coat: the “Egyptian dog,” the Tesem, preserved intact for millennia. #dogsofbluesky #dogpics #science #booksky #art

In my new #book, I explain an “iconographic short circuit”: we see a slender, point‑eared dog in a 4,000‑year‑old Egyptian tomb and assume it’s the ancestor of modern sighthounds.
But #genetics shows no direct continuity between the Tesem and today’s breeds.

Modern cynology loves mythological stories. Mediterranean hounds are a perfect example: sometimes said to descend from the Egyptian Tesem, other times carried across the seas by Phoenicians and Carthaginians — maybe even by ancient astronauts. But what do the real data say? #genetics #DogsofBluesky

These findings highlight the diversity of dogs in ancient Egypt and the cultural exchanges across the Mediterranean. I explore the Tesem and other Egyptian dog types in my #book ORIGINS.

If this specimen is truly a Tesem, it would be the first physical example ever found after centuries of relying only on tomb depictions. A remarkable confirmation of its historical reality.

No genetic data is available yet, but the anatomical similarities between this “Tesem” and Cretan hounds are striking. Both share tapered heads, long limbs, and a build made for speed.

A recent study by Belova et al. sheds new light on #dog remains from Deir el‑Banat, Egypt. Among seven specimens, one stands out: a presumed mummified “Tesem”, a type long known only from ancient depictions. #archaeology #history #dogsofbluesky

Personality wise- Adi'ir would be an adorable pitbull (lovable, sincere, and adaptable) but with his background and roots in the past/Allagan times (of which I HC it to be like Egypt), he'd be the Tesem dog!

Ankhu was depicted on the tomb walls of nomarch Djehutihotep.
Short legs, curled tail, upright ears — a striking figure.
He may have been a chondrodysplastic variant of the Tesem, much like today’s Basset Hound is to the #Bloodhound.
A small body, but a big role.
