Dogs are one of the most depicted animals on the walls of the tombs in ancient Egypt. We have different types, especially greyhounds: sloughi and Tesem. In particular, the Tesem is a dog whose remains have never been found, while of the sloughi we have several skeletons and even a mummy in the Cairo museum. However, if this breed really existed, it lasted for about 2,000 years, between the first dynasties and the Egyptian Middle Kingdom, and then was no longer represented, perhaps because it became extinct. In this context, the Egyptian street dog, the Baladi, could possibly be a descendant of those ancient dogs, as it has similar characteristics. Of course, a genetic analysis would be needed to determine whether this is true or not, but unfortunately, as already written, there are no remains of Tesem. This depiction of hunting dogs with curly tails is from a tomb at Naqada. It dates to the pre-Dynastic period of Egypt, approximately 3,300 BCE.

5,000 years ago, these dogs, called 'tesem', were aiding in the hunt & were beloved enough to be depicted in tomb carvings.

Let's dot the i's I'm using a post I made on Facebook that inspired me to write this post. Even today there is some confusion in the information, often peppered with false data, other times with incorrect data, on the origins of the Sloughi and the Saluki. I will try to clarify the concepts that I also reiterate in my book ORIGINS. Genetic research has shown that the sloughi and the saluki are not even related to each other. In fact, just as the saluki is originally from the Middle East, the sloughi is from North Africa. Both have two clades of their own, which the saluki shares with the Anatolian Shepherd and the sloughi with the Southern Italian Greyhound. The only similarity between the two breeds is their age: both the sloughi and the saluki are about 8,000 years old, as is the basenji, by the way. The history of the "Arabian greyhound" in relation to the sloughi, a misnomer, dates back to a mistake by a French dog breeder (A. Perron), who described this breed in 1952 as the "Arabian greyhound" and the "Asiatic greyhound". But at that time, genetic research applied to ancient DNA was not even conceivable. 1/2 In ancient Egypt, these greyhounds were often depicted together with the Tesem, the ancient Egyptian greyhounds, at least in the period from the Old to the Middle Kingdom, because after this period the Tesem disappeared. While the sloughi was depicted by the ancestors of the Egyptians much earlier (Nekhen, about 5,800 years ago) and after the disappearance of the Tesem. Sloughi remains date back to the Naqadian period (about 6,000 years ago), but the two most important, in my opinion, are the guardian of the tomb of Herneith (wife of Pharaoh Zoser) from about 4,650 years ago and the dog mummy exhibited in the Cairo museum (of the Middle Kingdom). On the other hand, there are known remains of Salukis from 6,500 years ago (a complete skull preserved in the Penn Museum in Philadelphia) found in Tepe Gawra (Iraq) and more recent remains, for example Tell Brak in Syria (4,000 years ago). The oldest representation of a Saluki is a seal depicting 2 of them, about 6,500 years ago; seal found in Tepe Gawra. Have I piqued your interest? Yes, the "sausage dog" might be an Anubis. Although, considering the tail, it could also be a representation of a dog—the so-called Tzm- or tesem dogs have pointy little ears as well,combined with a little curled tail.

On the Hemaka Disc (about 5,000 years ago). One of the oldest representations of the Tesem, along with the Sloughi, one of the two sighthounds favored by Pharaohs and dignitaries from the Old to the Middle Kingdom. The scene depicted on the disc shows two Tezem (or Tesem, in Egyptian 'tzm', 'hunting dog'), one tan and one black, hunting two gazelles of the species G. dorcas. These hunting dogs were very widespread, then disappeared from artistic representations. They probably became extinct long before the Greeks and Romans came into contact with this civilization (neither wrote or depicted these dogs). Now, the oldest known named pets. In the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu (c. 2566 BCE) there is a carving of a "Tesem" (hunting dog), named Akbaru.
In a relief dated to circa 2400 BCE there is a dog called Beha.
And in the tomb of Puimre, priest under Thutmose III (15th century BCE), appears Nedjem the cat.

One of the most fascinating finds: the stele of Iti and Neferu. It shows elegant greyhounds and a lapdog — possibly a Basenji. And among the desert winds, the Tesem and Sloughi hunted, guarded, and endured. The Tesem is extinct. The Sloughi still walks with us — 8000 years of history in its stride.
