#Testability
I'm a big fan of dependency injection, as a software design pattern. it makes it really easy for consumers of a library to customise "internal" behaviours (not to mention, improved testability)

Scientific American magazine needs to do better!

Regardless, this is why science rules!

Science is defined by its commitment to testability and falsifiability.

The research question is genuinely very interesting, but this particular paper is doing an incredible amount of interpretive work in constructing concepts like "testability" and "prestige" + making them commensurable across disciplines from the specific vantage point of economics
Prestige bias is a major problem in academia: success in academia leads to other unfair advantages.

Prestige bias is bigger in fields that are less scientific (eg., art, history). Fields where claims are more testable have lower prestige markers (eg math, physics). kurtishingl.com/files/PTTS_l...

Prefer correctness, clarity, and testability over convenience.

seems like there was an industry wide crisis in the mid 90s, as video games reached a standard of scale that while totally still broadly achievable, was slowing down development pipelines and artistic growth / testability

To me, tests are part of your system and its architecture, not a separate thing that's tacked on as an afterthought. As such, architectural principles that pervade the system must extend to the tests. Testability is an essential architectural characteristic that pervades the system.

In a modern #ABAP architecture, decoupling objects is an important component for ensuring testability. The first step involves identifying and then actually replacing the dependency: software-heroes.com/en/blog/abap...

designing your code for testability also means knowing how you're going to write test code and actually doing it. then you'll see where you fall short in that regard, and you'll be able to improve both your current code and write more testable code in the future.

Testability and falsifiability are slightly different concepts. That aside, there is a philosophical superstructure to claims about the natural world, including this very point about testability. Even the logical positivists allowed the analytic statements.

I am wary of libraries/frameworks that aren't easily testable and require creating your own wrappers or in-memory versions.

A library with a good developer experience includes good support for testability IMO.

The appendices are laugh-out-loud funny -- ahh, so "testability" = text search hits for general quantitative terminology and causal inference keywords.

If you work with software development I think you should buy Ash Winter and Robert Meaney's book Team Guide to Software Testability.

The longer version of my review can be found here.

You can't ban GenAI contributions, people will just try to hide it. Going to make them recognize they used this tool and to take responsability, testability, ... is the way.

Pseudoscience is a system of explanations, methods, and assumptions that pose as science but don’t follow core scientific principles like testability and falsifiability. 👇

New article up on our blog on functional programming: Markus Schlegel's "On the Testability of Pure Functions" talks about testability, formalisability, and the relationship between these two qualities. Read it here:

I read in a paper that "ratios are terrible" dependent variables

My field uses ratios *a lot*, & I've explicitly compared analysing raw versus ratio data: it didn't make *that* much difference 🤔

The paper cited Jasieński & Bazzaz FA (1999)
doi.org/10.2307/3546...

So I checked it out...

That's not a test of AI, that's a test of AWS culture.

A test of AI would be to have two teams of 5 senior engineers take a stab at this while controlling for quality, testability of the output, and only one can use LLMs.

The scientific method isn't that complicated.

really should stop for a second and get my input nice and rigged up properly and get my untiy remote working on my phone I suppose so I have fast iteration times for testability. that's next I guess.
