A Sumerian proverb, as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago.

There is no comprehension here, no meaning.

You input a question, it sees an incomplete fragment of text which it then completes by generating more text that looks statistically similar.

One of my favourite forum pranks was CSS code or summat to wrap every instance of the word “house” in a hyperlink to a text anchor that didn’t exist, with an alt text of some enormous spooky fragment of the book in it

So people would get jumpscared twice

This tiny fragment of an ancient stone bowl preserves a moment in the life of someone who helped bring babies into the world.

The bowl is broken, the name is broken, but the profession is not.

This bowl was dedicated to a deity by a sha-zu, a “midwife” sometime around 2500 BCE.

There's a broken cuneiform tablet from the Old Babylonian period, nearly 4,000 years ago, which preserves a tiny portion of a dialogue between two friends.

It feels a bit like the conversations I've been having for the past week, so I wanted to share it.

socialism is so dead in america that we are basically printing stories like "We're perhaps approaching post-scarcity, from classic Marxist text The Fragment on Machines, and the primary obstacle to universal happiness is the capitalists who own the machines" and then trying to ban the machines

Frisket Fragment Find Friday 🎉

Fragment of a frisket reused in a 17th-c. religious binding. Red printed text meant to be excluded remains visible, pointing to a liturgical context. The frisket itself is recycled from a liturgical manuscript. Also present: other fragments of printed binder’s waste.

Look I can barely start a conversation without quoting a snippet of a historical fragment of an ambiguously relevant text.
All this talk about how infodumping is a neurodivergent trait—listen, we grew up reading SFF in the Nineties, OF COURSE we infodump. Y’all are lucky we’re not a full on italicized prologue.

It may be broken and look unremarkable, but this is a rather unique cuneiform tablet, one of a handful written in the Akkadian language, but using the Ugaritic (consonantal) script, instead of logosyllabic signs. The tablets, from Ugarit, were produced around 1250 BCE, likely by the same scribe.

Margaret Paston Advent Day 22. Margaret refers to ‘disguising’ as a Christmas activity. We know the Pastons enjoyed Mummers Plays at Castor. We even have a fragment of what seems to be their ‘script’ for Robin Hood & the Sheriff of Nottingham. Trinity College, Cambridge, MS. R. 2. 64 (fragment).
