The literacy crisis is not just referring to people's ability to literally read and write. It's also people's inability to read for context.

i suggest replacing "canon vs non-canon" with something like: textual (stated in text), authorial (stated by author), subtextual (implied), interpretable (admits interpretation by text), meta-textual (thematically interpretable by subtext), headcanon (audience creation for derivative art purpose)
"this character can't be trans because the author wasn't explicitly trying to create a trans woman"
