you could probably turn off the fast transparency so the fires/clouds can render/encode better
only real flaws of SoftDrv really are these things:
-constant video memory reads = slow on NT
-very affine model texturemapping
-no gamma control = brightness only controls lighting contrast
-imprecise Z

Yeah, seems like a variant of c-buffer / coverage buffer (if I remember the terminology correctly).
Not sure if it's worth the extra overhead just for the basic texturemapping in the screenshot, but "I'm sure they profiled it" :).
Could definitely be worthwhile for more complex per-pixel work.
