Clinical application of base editing for treating β-thalassaemia - Nature
A clinical phase 1 trial of a single infusion of CS-101, CD34+ cells modified using a transformer base editor to reactivate fetal haemoglobin production, led to early and enduring transfusion independence in patients with β-thalassaemia.

"For millions of people living with β-haemoglobinopathies worldwide, including SCD and β-thalassaemia, the infrastructure needed for chemotherapy, stem-cell transplantation and ex vivo gene editing remains out of reach — particularly in in low‑resource settings."

Brixton’s new blood donor centre is vitally important in addressing the need for blood donors, particularly from Black communities.

There’s an urgent need for more Black Londoners to give blood to provide life-saving transfusions to sickle cell patients

Stem cell transplantation could be a rapid and effective way to restore haemoglobin production in individuals with the blood disorder β-thalassaemia, according to a study in Nature. The treatment could reduce dependence on blood transfusions in some people with the disease in the future. #medsky 🧪

Large-scale gene-editing therapy in adults is something I have been excited about since I first heard about CRISPR - and it's finally here. 🧪
More of these and for more genetic syndromes, please.
The wielder, elective, stuff - that's a discussion for another day.

(24%) of people with sickle cell disease had spent 1-2 weeks in hospital. The treatment will be offered at specialist NHS centres in London, Manchester and Birmingham, and follows a deal in August 2024 for the NHS to access exa-cel for eligible patients with transfusion dependent beta-thalassaemia.
