Think you know your comic characters? What about The Heap, decades before Swamp Thing or Man-Thing, there was The Heap, making his debut in Air Fighters Comics #3 from January 1942, The Heap is Baron Eric von Emmelman, a German World War I flying ace who crashed into a swamp. Rather than dying, his body became fused with the swamp itself (sound familiar?). Over years, mud, moss, roots, and vegetation enveloped him until he transformed into a massive, shambling humanoid mass known only as The Heap. Unlike later swamp creatures, The Heap wasn't initially a superhero. He was more of a tragic monster—part horror character, part pulp adventure figure. His earliest stories portrayed him as a mysterious swamp creature haunting criminals, spies, and enemy agents during World War II. Although terrifying in appearance, he often acted on the side of justice. The character became surprisingly popular and eventually took over the cover and lead-feature status in many issues. His original run largely ended in the early 1950s as the Golden Age faded. He was revived by Eclipse comics in the 1980's and then again by Image in 1991, lasting only 4 issues.
