There’s a subplot about the US government attempting to exert control over the new multiverse and, well, good luck with that. It’s obviously doomed just from the premise.

Governments can barely exert control over their own countries now. Try finding a cost-efficient way of taxing people spread out thinly across infinite worlds. Who can teleport at will.
Also, what’s the point? There is, again, suddenly infinite resources and living space for everyone.

I feel it would have been better to do Culture-style novels in this setting, either focusing on people’s day-to-day lives, or an equally exotic outside threat (like First Person Singular, although they’ve been building that up for two books and it has hardly appeared).

‘Almost everyone can teleport at will and there are infinite parallel worlds with unlimited resources,’ is a cool, utopian idea, but not one which lends itself to fast-paced plots.
I am about 400 pages into ‘The Long War,’ and there is no war. War in this setting is very silly.

Reading The Long Earth series, and had the thought that while it’s a fantastic *setting*, it’s also very difficult to have meaningful conflict and the authors’ attempts to do so aren’t particularly convincing.
