Romy hesitates at the doorway. Boone's voice calls out, "ROMY!" Romy turns toward the hallway (everything is in a monochrome red, adding to the sense of urgency and danger). Boone's leg is dragged away by thin spider webs, and he reaches out a hoof toward Romy as he clutches at the carpet under him. "P-PLEASE! Before it drags me to hell... I mean - HECK!" Romy starts running after him. 'Hold on! I'm coming!' She reaches her own paw toward him, and it comes closer to touching Boone's hoof, before he's yanked away, with Romy's paw instead clamping onto the surrounding air. Boone continues screaming as he is lifted away and slightly upward. "ROOOOOOOH-MEEEEEEY!" Romy slams snout-first on the ground.

Romy's head swivels around toward the doorway where the scream was heard. 'That's... Boone?' Boone stands at the doorway, looking panicky, with both arms raised against the wall. Echo sticks a finger in her ear. "Ah, yes. One of the fundamental laws of nature. You'll always HEAR Boone coming before you see him." Boone pulls at his ears in despair. "THEY'RE AFTER ME!!!" Echo asks, calmly, "Uh... who?" Boone, exasperated: "Th- THE GHOSTS! Who else?!" He shivers at the doorway. "Echo, HELP! They're -" Something winds around his leg and yanks him down the hall. "AAAAAAIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!" Echo puts a hand to Romy's shoulder. "Come on, Romy. We better go after him." Romy looks on, worriedly but determined. 'Right.'

Book 1.106: Special
- February 1st, 2021

#readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics
Romy thinks back to what she remembered hearing near the gas station. 'So it's true, then. Slumber really is a place we can't leave.' She sweats nervously. 'And maybe... not everyone is as complaisant as they seem...' Echo interrupts Romy's thoughts with an "Anyway." She hands the phone back to Romy. "Here." Romy looks back at the phone screen, which displays the time 3:00 with a row of question marks underneath. Echo advises, "If I were you, I'd try to keep an eye on your phone in case that number calls you again." She explains further. "This may sound a bit strange. But. I think your phone has the potential to be... SPECIAL. Especially seeing as it carried over with you to Slumber." Romy asks, "Special? You mean like -" She's unable to finish that thought, as a loud BAAAAAAAAAA! resonates from somewhere nearby, startling and shaking Romy and Echo with the sudden loudness of it.

Echo confirms to Romy, "Nothing but static on the other end." She closes her eyes and gives a pained smile. "I guess I was just hoping... ah. It's silly." Romy: "What is?" Echo averts her eyes. "Well. You know..." She explains further. "Your phone is the first one I've seen since I came to Slumber myself. I thought we might have a chance of establishing contact... with someone on the outside." Romy is startled, remembering an earlier conversation that implied something similar. "The outside?! You mean... outside of Slumber... right?" Echo: "Yeah. I suppose Boone must've already told you... frankly, I'd be MORE surprised if he didn't."

Echo lifts her finger toward the phone, staring down at its glow. She then taps the screen to accept the call. She holds it up to her ear. "... hello?" Echo waits for a response, as Romy wipes away her tears in the background. Echo continues waiting, and Romy glances up, a bit curious. Echo murmurs sadly as she hangs up the call. Romy asks, "Wh-who was it?" Echo frowns, appearing steadily more worried. "..... I don't know..."

Romy looks down at their phone, still shocked, scared and too paralyzed to move. "..... I......" The phone continues buzzing, and Romy sweats with apprehensive fear before they give into their anxiety shamefully. "I can't...." Echo looks over at Romy's phone from the corner of her eye. She continues leaning in curiously, before nervously asking, "Uh. May I... ?" Romy spins around, utterly confused. "HUH?! I-I mean..." She hands the phone over to Echo. "... sure... "

Book 1.102: The Caller
- January 4th, 2021

#readslumbertown #thepearl #webcomics
The scene suddenly transitions back to Romy's hotel room, where things are relatively back to normal (no anthropomorphic furniture) and Romy's just staring down at their buzzing phone, teary-eyed and petrified and kinda shell-shock. Echo's shadow lurks behind the door, a bit creepily at first, before coming into view with a slightly concerned but mostly indiscernible expression. "..... Romy?" Romy looks up at Echo, speechless. As she comes closer, Romy pulls into herself anxiously, apologizing to Echo in fear of another confrontation. "I'm so sorry, Echo. I didn't find -" Echo brushes off the apology though, instead voicing her concern for the scared and crying Romy. "Are you okay? Are you hurt?" Echo looks over, noticing with surprise the unknown number trying to call Romy via their phone. She asks, hesitantly, "Are you... going to answer that?"

Romy: 'This CAN'T be happening.' Furniture: "... an anxious wreck... she's always been better off alone..." Romy shivers and looks around in a paranoid state, tears streaming down her face. The lamp responds, "Oh... you mean the coworkers you've barely known for a day?" The tv winks and displays a static broadcast of Echo and Boone partnering up with each other at the Lost and Found. Romy stutters. "W-well. Yes. I mean..." The tv displays visuals of Romy's insecurities - a clip of Boone ignoring/forgetting about Romy while talking excitedly to somebody else, followed by a clip of Echo leaning down at Romy's level and giving a skeptical glare from behind shielded lenses. TV: "You really think Boone will always be there for you? He'll get bored of you and move on! And don't FORGET! Echo was so disappointed in you... she made you cry, didn't she?" Romy starts crying and tries to cover her ears. "No... s-stop..." The lamp continues icing her, unperturbed. "Lonely little Romy... it's always the same in the end, isn't it? What's the matter? You gonna cry AGAIN?"

One of the drawers mocks her saying, "Isn't she just the saddest thing you've ever seen?" Romy sweats and twiddles their fingers self-consciously, as a couple of sock puppets dip out from the sock drawer. "Hehe, I'll say! Look at her. The hunched posture... the nervous twiddling..." Romy looks down at her feet in horror, as the rug underneath it also mocks condescendingly, "... the way she stands, quivering, with her tail between her legs..." The rug pulls itself up from underneath her, causing Romy to fall back once again with a surprised yelp.

Romy notices the scent disappearing behind it. '... oh. It stops here.' She reaches a paw out toward the knob slowly, and turns it. Apprehensively, she opens the door and peeks inside. "Um. Boone?" She glances around. ".... are you in here... ?" As she searches for him, nervously, the door behind her begins to creak shut. "I-it's me. Romy..." The door SLAMS shut, startling her! She swivels back toward the door and tries opening it back up, but the knob is stuck. "Oh, dog! It's locked! Are you kidding... ?!" Romy walks down the hallway path, following the purple scent, which leads them through a comic page of various wall photos and memories from their first day in Slumber. The Slumber memories are noticeably front and center while their past memories from back home are cracked, faded or covered up by the new memories. Romy grows increasingly anxious as they embark further down the hall. '....... I've... been walking for a while... it's so DARK. When does this hallway end? Am I... LOST? No. Focus..... I must be getting close. I need to... keep going. Keep searching. UNTIL...' They scratch their head and stop, looking up at something ahead.
