Yesterday's harvest vs today's:

Saffron must be harvested by hand, as that red filament IS the spice.

The filaments turn into hardly anything, which is why saffron is--by weight--the most expensive spice on earth.

The petals can also be dried for use in herbal tea!

In the lower right corner are a dozen-ish dried red saffron filaments, and in the lower left corner are today's recently harvested ones - looking much larger and more vibrant. The top half of the tray has the petals from the spent blooms from the past couple of days. Closeup of saffron filaments - the bottom being yesterday's harvest, and the top being today's. Yesterday's saffron is much smaller and darker red, and are very brittle. Today's are 2-3 times larger, and far more vibrant. By tomorrow, they'll all look the same.

Two light purple saffron crocus blossoms have spurted from the same corm! Each has six, pointed petals with white lengthwise stripes that widen at the edge, resembling a large plume or an art nouveaux fountain. Behind them, some dark green grass-like leaves, and out of focus on the dirt are dozens of itty-bitty oxalis (each with three heart-shaped leaves) Three saffron blossoms - in the front, one with a darker shade of purple (somewhere between lilac and regular purple), and two slightly out of focus behind it, with lighter purple. All three have lengthwise white stripes on their six petals, that spread at the edges like an ostrich feather. From the center of each, three yellow pollen-covered stamens poke out, as well as three reddish orange filaments. Closeup of a single, light purple saffron crocus. Its six petals are angled in such a way that the flower is triangular shaped. The center/base of the petals is dark purple, from which three yellow pollen-covered stamens protrude. Three orange-red filaments lie draped across the lower petals. A closer inspection will reveal pollen on the petal in the 6 o'clock position, indicating that a pollinator had been there

A light purple saffron crocus with white stripes going lengthwise up the petals, like an art nouveau fountain design, is growing out of the middle of some itty-bitty oxalis (that look like clovers but with heart-shaped leaves). Three long orange-red filaments with tiny yellow fringe at the very ends are draped out of it in the lower right. In the middle of the three yellow pollen-covered stamens is a honeybee living its best life. All we can really see is its butt. A six-petaled saffron crocus blossom with light lilac-colored petals with pale white stripes going lengthwise and spreading at the tips, like a fancy plume. In the center are three yellow pollen-covered stamens. One full reddish orange filament is laying on the petal in the 6 o'clock position, and part of another one is drooped between the 6 and 7 o'clock petals. Below it is a bunch of tiny oxalis, with its heart-shaped leaves. A 1 meter square raised garden bed with about 10 pale purple saffron crocus blossoms. Most of the bed is covered with tiny oxalis leaves, but in some of the bare patches, some grass-like saffron leaves are poking up. In a small, cracked plastic flowerpot dish are about a dozen reddish orange saffron filaments, along with a tiny bit of a petal that came off with some of them. The dish is sitting in the grass, and we can see regular clover leaves around it.
