The meaning of Mahayana (the largest sect of Buddhism) is "greater vehicle" in Sanskrit. To be contrasted with Hinayana, or "lesser vehicle", which is sort of a diminutive term the majority calls Therevada (and other) Buddhist traditions.

There is also a psyop around the far-right new "king" Vajiralongkorn in Thailand & Therevada forest buddhism monks attempting to invert the meaning of Nirvana/Nibanna in Buddhism or at least Therevada Buddhism. (They're also pushing conspiracy theories like chemtrails and anti-EU narratives.)

i like +Live+ because it sounds like devotional music for a religion which doesn't exist. like, they're all white Buddhists from the Appalachian part of Pennsylvania, so it's all has this weird Therevada snake-handler vibe.

I vote for Therevada Buddhism. Rotating the young men through the monasteries for a year or two could chill them out and save the EMTs of Spain a lot of headaches.

Also it is pointed out jhana is not needed for insight in Tibetan, but therevada recommends it. Tantra uses progressions of visualisation yet in second jhana you don't have applied or sustained thought. N sutra says union of calm abiding n emptyness.

Btw, Mao was a Therevada Buddhist. All had warped beliefs and zero empathy. Their atrocities were based on beliefs. Atheism is a lack of belief. Atheism isn't a cause, beliefs are. Get an education. That meme makes you look stupid.

I don't think this is accurate. In my limited experience, the Therevada Buddhists are more about the gods being elsewhere on a different plane than it is about them not existing.

I don't think it's a failing, I think it's the nature of text. There are no major religious texts that are not open to interpretation, which is why the major religions have schismatic groups: catholic, protested, shia, sunni, therevada, mahayana, vajrayana, etc.

best literary resource for people interested in getting into reading the Therevada Canon, the most scholarlyly authentic record of the historical Buddha's teachings. A good alternative that focuses a bit more on the exegetical introduction chapters is On the Path by Thanissaro Bhikku. It's dealers->

I'd highly recommend you do some research on the early buddhist schools that we have documentation on, it's very interesting and can shed some fresh light on the Pali canon and even its lost earlier editions
