Thank you. I still get a warm glow from reading comments like this - maybe especially now that thinkinghistory is 20 years old. Maybe I ought to have a 21st party for it next year!

It will be fascinating to see how you approach this - I've been saying for ages i'll update the material on big stories on Thinkinghistory because it's now 16 years old so maybe you're providing the motivation i need!

Will post when they go on Thinkinghistory - my wife does all the technical stuff. I do the easy bits.

Finally happy with 'The Goldilocks Principle: Writing about a 15th Century Family' - the brief intro to my chapters on the Redmayns in the 15thC, the first 10 of which I hope to put on Thinkinghistory next week. Rarely have I had so many goes at drafting 500 words.

Hi Kirstie - there's an activity in this section of Thinkinghistory called 'Why was the harvest so important?' that may be useful and another on the Black death in an imaginary village called Allton which can help with depopulation - can be done with students in role or character cards of villagers

New 'Redmayn' chapter on Thinkinghistory - thinkinghistory.co.uk/MedievalFami...
11. Sir Richard Redmayn – a serious man? 1405-1413
What motivated him to put so much energy into royal service – rewards of land & wealth or was he a ‘serious man’ who served the king for ‘serious reasons’?

Anne H probably knew the young Henry better than anyone and there was a plan at one point for him to marry her daughter, Maud. She ended up marrying the earl of Northumberland. There's activities and resources on H7 on Thinkinghistory at thinkinghistory.co.uk/ActivityKS/A...

Reposting link to a new article on Thinkinghistory, touching on an 'understanding-rich curriculum':
"The most important questions to ask history students of all ages: identifying students’ metanarratives and preconceptions"

It must be from 2004 after I got the vast sums of money from the HEFCE award and set up Thinkinghistory which is 21 this year! We filmed Dan, Dale etc on the Friday morning before the SHP conference

A mere 50,000 words plus so the envelope must be feeling quite battered but it can stay on thinkinghistory - 30 years of editors, deadlines etc was enough for me.

Ellie - if you have queries about thinkinghistory or the material on it do get in touch. I'm always happy to answer questions. It was never a 'download and teach' site but ideally a stimulus to creativity for individual teachers - the aims of the site here thinkinghistory.co.uk/Other/ethos....
What's this Website All About?
History teaching methods, resources for history teachers, guidance for trainee teachers

Have you been working with Dale? (I had a look on Amazon!) - I worked on books and CPD with Dale from c2000 starting with King John. Just a great person to work with - so many brilliant ideas - and there's a lot of his material on Thinkinghistory.

Do you have a version of the Maiden castle activity you use with trainees? Maybe could adapt and put on Thinkinghistory?
May 23, 2025 at 10:46 AM
in Exploring and Teaching Medieval History (p10) Mark Ormrod wrote that our biggest shock would be just how empty England was. There's an activity on Thinkinghistory about voter numbers in 19/20C - stage 2 of thinkinghistory.co.uk/ActivityBase...
Maybe you could adapt that to show population change
