#Tilberi
“To create a tilberi, the woman has to steal a human rib from a churchyard, wrap it in wool & keep it between her breasts. When she takes communion, she must spit the sacred wine over the bundle. The 3rd spurt of holy wine will bring the tilberi to life.”

The Tilberi were the pets of #Icelandic witches and you can see them in the #Icelandic Museum of Sorcery and #Witchcraft, where I visited as part of the new film on History Hit, Witchmen: the Icelandic age of ice and fire.

(Apparently, these are tilberi, or milk-sucking demons, created by WICKED WOMEN to suckle on the cows of other farmers until they were filled with milk. They would then return to their ‘mother’ and vomit up butter)

You can get it to run errands for you! Like steal milk etc. BUT you have to cut a flap of skin on your thigh that the tilberi suckles from like a nipple 😮

The concept of tilberi butter was immortalized in a review of the first novel by author Halldór Laxness (who would later receive a Nobel Prize in literature), which was quite short: "Machine-churned tilberi butter". The reviewer apparently did not like the novel very much.

Contains ‘tilberi’, which will interest anyone who's seen the 1987 Icelandic horror film ‘Tilbury’.
One of my favourite historical anniversaries today: 370 years ago, Jón Jónsson and his son, er… Jón Jónsson were burnt at the stake in Iceland for attacking a priest with witchcraft and casting fart runes on a girl
Odd this day
It’s April 10, and that can only mean one thing. YES, THAT’S RIGHT! It’s the anniversary of Jón Jónsson and his son Jón Jónsson being burnt…

In Icelandic tales, the Tilberi is a bizarre supernatural creature—created by witches from a dead man's rib and wool—that steals milk from neighbors. It feeds by sucking milk from cows and sheep, returning to its mistress to regurgitate the stolen goods. #FairyTaleTuesday #FairyTaleFlash

Conjuring a tilberi seemed like a good idea at the time...

And a special thanks to the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery for allowing me to use the museum’s excellent photo in this manner!

There’s actually way more to this and I highly recommend reading up on some Icelandic folklore because it’s fucking delightful

In continuation of our other conversation, I’ll go with an obscure one— Tilberi, a creature from Icelandic folklore created by witches to steal milk from cows and ewes to make butter 🧈 😂😂😂

The tilberi was supposed to get its strength from my adductor muscle juices and then be on its merry way to the nearest cow in order to assault its udder with its mandibles and thereby steal some fresh milk for my morning coffee. But something went wrong.
