#Time-complexity
I see so many people demonizing Doublefine for this when I think the whole article speaks to the complexity of employment at a small/midsized modern studio

No answers, but I understand the frustration of both some long time people feeling left out and those wanting formal representation...

Made a new Halloween icon!!

I’ll do these for $75 (shaded like this) or $50 (flats), hmu if you want one! Can be spooky (colors will be stylized) or autumn themed!

Payment is up front, fast turnaround time :3
Complexity and excessive edits may warrant extra!

it's linear time in the input, but yeah you need a scalable family of functions to even talk about asymptotic complexity stuff
October 10, 2026 at 1:31 AM
There is a lot of complexity (but also not at the same time) LOL
October 11, 2026 at 9:44 PM
I think a LOT depends on the style and complexity and whether it’s a team or one person, too

Like, are we talking Dogman or Batman or The Incal or One Piece or Witch Hat Atelier or what? Those are all going to require vastly different amounts of time!
October 10, 2026 at 11:02 PM
In fairness I think that happens to a lot of complexity theorists, too. The original complexity was assumed to be n^2 rather than n*log n for the longest time

But still, shaving an infinitesimal percentage of the power of the log is a long way from an exponential speed-up

yeah i'm with goose on network effects being a bigger issue than conceptual complexity, people like the idea in theory

anyone remember how hard it was to get people to sign up for a facebook account the first time? friggin' impossible, even i was a holdout for a while
i have explained atproto to many normal people and they all nod tentatively and say "huh that sounds cool".

its not that complicated, people generally like the idea, theres just a huge amount of inertia to overcome to switch platforms

At the behest of one of my more normie friends, I am watching The Office (2005-2013) for the first time and one of my major takeaways is that the character of Erin might well be Aphrodite herself,, to me,

Her relentless cheer combined with her inability to perform tasks of medium complexity hngnghh

Um, OBVIOUSLY only one individual thing can be true at a time because the world has the complexity and nuance of an episode of Scooby Doo, JEEZ.

Depends on the size of the code base and complexity of the solution but so far that doesnt seem to make a difference. The bottleneck is still reviews and revisions even with senior level engineers because of the volume of code produced. And senior devs have to spend time more time refactoring.

I always regarded game dev as a mix of dark magic and superhuman effort, and looking at the amount of complexity 90s game devs managed to pack in a few bytes this view is largely correct.
The further you go back in time the more extreme the optimizations (eg try reversing a SNES game)

Seems like the time complexity of you gettin some bitches is unbounded

That way every time I eat popcorn I have to contemplate how we are doomed to never fully understand the depth of complexity in nature, and whether that unknowability drives humanity’s desire to destroy nature.

Would anyone be interested in some budget-friendly small kinktober comms? I don't have time for big ones anymore, but shorter ones for some pocket money I can still do.

Budget friendly meaning around 30 - 50$ for a 1500 - 2500k words depending on complexity

I was just thinking about how if, today, I need to do (software thing), it is likely to be cheaper and easier to just get an LLM to do it, or write the code to do it, than to spend time trying to find an existing app. Up to shockingly high levels of complexity.
October 9, 2026 at 1:10 PM
That definitely describes some of the software I've written haha. "Oh this can't be hard.... oh wait the depth of complexity is endless. time to roll up my sleeves, the only way out is through"
October 12, 2026 at 5:00 PM
tbh the funny thing about big-O notation is that it's the best way to measure complexity in some machine-agnostic way but at the same time it can be really bad tool for practical algorithmic analysis.

O(log(n)) is usually a lot faster than O(1) at realistic scales.
October 8, 2026 at 8:16 PM
They could be doing something ~nefarious~ in that complexity, sure, but 99% of the time they don’t need complexity to hide it and can just do it in plain sight.

The 9th John Day Fossil Beds National Monument special issue paper is out!!! This time, Kelly Lubbers and I look at enamel band patterns on the chewing surfaces of beaver teeth.
