In the middle of a vast lake rises a single stone pedestal with a landing just large enough for a man to kneel. The brave leave offerings for those who would listen, and at night you swim up from the depths to take what's been given. What gift do you treasure most?

A hundred feet above the street, perched on swaying scaffolding with chisels at your belt, you chip away at stone no one will ever see. No excuse for poor workmanship. Water needs to be managed; stone brought alive. What hidden gargoyle do you carve life into today?

Three days after you return from the underground forest, you begin noticing them. A tiny blue frog perched on your toothpaste. A jade green cat in the salt shaker. Two black cows hidden behind your TBR pile. What do you do with these secret gifts from tiny admirers?

The shops love a trend, and you can't help but jump on board. First was the Watermelon Quenchers served in a full watermelon. Then collectible gingerbread men, who staged a revolt and built their own village. What oddity do you find yourself ordering today?

The stickiest dragon, soft-scaled in ripe lovebird colours (green, yellow, coral). Found in one-in-a-million mangos, the bigger ones, sometimes identified by the fruit's heat, even out of direct sun. They don't take to domestication but it sunbasks on the patio while I read poetry. #TinyTalesTuesday
The mango tree has been protected by your family for generations. Its fruit is the best in the world, but it's not for sale. Most contain a normal pit, but every so often, there's something else inside. Something delicate and precious. What did you find last spring?

Once, the trees purpled in fall and their leaves became moths that hibernated in roof thatch for winter. Rain fell sweet as sugar, though of course there are some who drank too deep and slumber still. What do you miss from the year the Fae Queen wandered our realm?

Outlaw Jim? Outlaw Jim has a mouth so foul he sends sailors crying to momma. Outlaw Jim got swallowed by a dragon and in two days the dragon was begging him to leave. Outlaw Jim does more with eight fingers than a pianist does with ten. Why, what have YOU heard?

You know the bridge upriver that came down last spring? Naw, wasn't floods. It was Outlaw Jim. He got hisself into a pull-up contest with a troll. Troll did 100 pull-ups and Outlaw Jim only did 99, but he pulled the bridge down on top o' hisself, so they reckoned he won after all.

When they call you a trash goblin, they don't mean it kindly. But you don't care. You chose this life, down here in the Rifts Between, amid the refuse and refugees of civilizations, and you wouldn't choose any other. How did you first slip into the Rifts?

One Wednesday morning, classically, on a banana peel. You'd think that joke would wear thin, much like the name-calling but it remains. So will I, long after those in the Above are dust and myth themselves. That's the beauty of here - we craft our own, remain immortal. #tinytalestuesday

Money is a thing of the past. All basic needs are taken care of, and if you need something you can't make yourself you find it at the market and take it. All will contribute what they can, when they can, however they are able. What do you bring the communal tables?

Today is a blue day. Blue clothes, blue hat, bouquet of cornflowers picked on your way out. You fill your basket with blueberries and plums. When customers bring you their broken trinkets you repair the cracks with tiny blue stitching. What colour will tomorrow be?

The fibrous stalks that rise from the creep blink as I approach. They quiver and broaden into wide, fleshy caps that smell of white pepper and cumin. It feels wrong to pull species that people can eat, but when the reverse is true as well, the morality becomes a little clearer.

Invasive Species Management means spending a lot of time tearing up plants by the root when you'd rather be tending to those in your garden. But the work must be done. Howling Mandrake, Creeping Moly, Audrey's Brood, and more. What are you tackling today?

There's only been one single documented case of thornstrife catching a person, and that was a young kid. Small for his age, too. They razed that patch to the ground after, but they have to keep burning it every spring to keep the shoots from coming back. #TinyTalesTuesday
Thornstrife is a real problem. It was imported from the continent 300 yrs ago for decoration, but we don't have the megafauna to keep it under control here. It can tangle up anything smaller than a cat and feed it into its rhizome network to self-fertilize. Awful stuff. Admittedly pretty, though.

An octopus ensconced itself in one of the buildings below the surface, grown so vast its striated body can be glimpsed from all the open windows. It trades in secrets now, and I let a small one escape in a bubble in exchange for a small, locked chest. Oh, how it whispers. #TinyTalesTuesday

The universe ticks, precise in repetition.

Ah, but to disrupt the divine clockwork! To end the cycle of all things that rise and fall, back and forth, live and die.

Plans are made. A great chaotic act that cannot be predicted or prevented. To spit in God’s eye and say:

Cuckoo.

At last, the edge of the world. A rocky promontory juts over the rim; looking down you see water falling into abyss, hanging vines and gnarled trees clinging to vanishing cliffside. It is peaceful after a long journey, but you can't escape the question: What next?

Filtration systems are good, but no mortal filter can handle debris that washes down the river from Faerie. The fae detritus follows the current to gather in a lake, where you dredge it by hand before anything slips downstream. What do you pull from the water today?
