Crane flies (Tipuloidea) are sometimes called skeeter-eaters, but as adults they often don't eat anything. They might have nectar, but never mosquitoes.

There’s a genus of cylindrotomid crane flies named  𝘓𝘪𝘰𝘨𝘮𝘢. Largely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere.

About 10(?) described species.

None of them named nuts.

Yet.

What an opportunity.

A #cranefly whose species is totally unknown to me, on a leaf at Warwoman Dell in #NorthGeorgia this past Sunday. Who is this beautiful black and orange cranefly? Any #Tipuloidea fans recognize it?

A cranefly, with a long, very thin body; very long spidery legs; anda pair of long, transparent wings, resting on a bright green leave with serrated edges. The cranefly's legs are black, the vein bordering the top of each wing is golden yellow, the thorax is white (or pale gray), and the abdomen is striped black and bright orange.

- that craneflies (tipuloidea) are true flies (diptera) i always assumed the common name was maybe a misnomer because they're so spindly😙 [note: not really a good reason because I'm learning how varied flies are]

The main victim? The hoverfly Melangyna viridiceps, which was also the most frequent flower visitor. The same insects helping reproduction often ended up becoming lunch. (6/10)
