#ToR2e
A return to Eriador and our ongoing ftf #ToR2e campaign on Sunday in Edinburgh. Helped by some smart tactics, effective taunting (and lucky rolls), the Fellowship survived their quest to the hidden vale of Morglynd, and the evil that lay in wait… #TheOneRing #ttrpgq

We've started with the D&D variant because they're familiar with that - and there's a lot to like about the variant - but it doesn't feel quite as "Tolkien" as I'd like. Couple of them have said something similar. I'd like to try TOR2E at some point and see how we get on.

EASY!

Just run the SciFi with TOR2e
& run the Tolkien with I2D20!

Some more great TOR2e content

Well, actually TOR2.5e. Or maybe 2.1e? 3e?

Decided to add the $40 cloth map.

Remembered the existing cloth map folded unused and unloved on shelf behind me.

Removed $40 cloth map.

Oooh look what arrived...

I'm getting my recent TOR2e order today. It's taken about three weeks but then that gave me time to finish reading everything else

Yes I'm loving The Dungeon Book, I've got Invincible to open, and two TOR2e supplements on order, but yesterday I was gifted four books on oboe technique and history and it's party time in the Dicemechanic house 🤟🎼🤟

Many thanks to @asako-soh.bsky.social for putting on the much beloved annual Owlbear and Wizard's Staff #ttrpg event! Played in @icooper.bsky.social Legend in the Mist and @burnafterrunning.bsky.social TOR2e. Great games. I ran a fun session of Zweihander Reforged. Looking forward to next year.

Yeah, I've been mucking about building Character Sheets for TOR2e

And a Combat Resolution Tracker. Still very nascent

Nearly finished reading Moria for TOR2e.

Question is, what to read next?

Invincible is sat there in its shrink wrap

Questworlds went to Canada with me but remained stubbornly unread

MERP Moria is also calling out to me (which is as far as I got on my abortive MERP readthru)

Is TOR2e Strider Mode in a particular book? I vaguely remember something about it in a Kickstarter, but don't seem to have a pdf of it

Tbh I wish I remembered the TOR2e rules a bit better because some parts slightly washed over me, but I actually think solo or duo RPing as part of Balin's contingent is the single most compelling adventuring idea in this book
August 28, 2026 at 3:51 PM
Been websearching for TOR2e house rules, and have seen things like rules for infection and spending treasure to expand bases, and I wonder whether some gamers have ever actually read Lord of the Rings.

TOR2e Minor Irritation: random tables refer to rolling a "Success Die". They mean a D6. Just call it a D6. Like we have done for 50 years. You're not special with your fancy Success Die talk, you know?

I found the TOR2e journey rules disappointing. Random tables of events without enough variety, and leaving it to the GM to make it interesting. Sadly, this is the same. Now this book has LOADS of guidance to make Moria interesting, but they're not directly tied to the journey rules. The journey

Right, having read two TOR2e books this week, what's next on the reading pile?

Oh, lookee here...

P.s. have rediscovered the fact that on a summer's morning in the Conservatory, 7.30-8.30am before starting work is just perfect reading time.

Had a thought about party formation in TOR2e

RPG wisdom is you start the group together. Maybe even drop them in medias res.

I think that's wrong. The first scene in a TOR campaign should be a patron (or events or dreams) bringing a group together.

Starting with group roleplay is Tolkien's way

Yeah, I'm slowly working my way through all my existing TOR2e purchases, with two more on the way!

LotR vs. TOR2e

LotR is a book of hope. Heroes try stuff and it pays off and everyone wins. Yay!

TOR2e shows the context. It's a world in decline, of people living on the edge, losing hope. It's entirely consistent with what Tolkien wrote, it's just showing the other side.

And that's great.
August 20, 2026 at 1:51 PM
Well, obviously I've signed up for the new Free League TOR2e crowdfunding push.

Gondor here we come!
August 20, 2026 at 12:28 PM
I would go further and argue that LotR is also about the things TOR2e is showing! LotR is about hope, sure, but very explicitly and obviously in a world of darkness, uncertainty, decline, and despair.

Have finished reading Hands of the White Wizard

I'm a big Tolkien lover. I have a nearly complete MERP collection.

But I was disappointed in the #TOR2e starter set and never finished it.

However, there is no way now on Illuvatar's own Arda that I don't GM The One Ring.

This is SO good.

Looking into VTTs for The One Ring, I find it a bit odd that there's no official VTT support for TOR2e.

I'm guessing this is a side-effect of the licensing agreement, given there are lots of licensed video games out there. Maybe the license doesn't allow any non-book based digital content?
August 18, 2026 at 2:56 PM
I continue to experiment with Copilot to test its capabilities

I'm not saying it's completely shit.

But I asked it what VTT support there was for TOR2e, and it said Role had official modules, which it evidenced with a link to the unofficial module on the Foundry website

😆
