About 15,000 Native peoples live in the area, including Tolowa, Yurok, Wiyot, Hupa, Karok, Modoc, Klamath and Shasta peoples.

A new Native college is opening in California State University. It’s a first for California and has been praised by Native leaders like State Assembly Member James Ramos (Serrano/Cahuilla) and Annette Reed (Tolowa Dee-ni’) who will be the college’s 1st dean. It’s slated to open for Fall 2025. ¹/
