Revisited Tolquhon Castle over the Easter weekend, which is a firm favourite of mine. Fine Scots Renaissance architecture with an elegant courtyard plan, a richly decorated gatehouse, first-floor galleries, and formal gardens where comfort and domestic practicality takes precedence over defense.

Visited a true Hidden Gem in the hot afternoon today. Tolquhon Castle, built by William Forbes, 7th Laird, 1584-1589 as an extension to the earlier tower house known as Preston's Tower. Although ruined, the castle has been described as "the most characteristic château of the Scots Renaissance."

Tarves also has an interesting little local museum and a cafe. Nearby are the impressive remains of Tolquhon Castle - swallows swoop in summer through the broken stonework - and the Tolquhon Gallery - excellent contemporary art an enchanting garden: a satisfying day out in rural Aberdeenshire.

Although the first edition of Aberdeenshire: north and Moray has fab photos and was only published in 2015. (They chose an aerial of Tolquhon, informative but not pretty.)

Bee boles with skeps in them. Tolquhon Castle, near Ellon to the north of Aberdeen. (That’s ‘Ta-hoon’, if you were wondering- I did.)

Tarves church, Aberdeenshire. Built 1798, with particularly fine ‘cherry-cocking’, the Tolquhon aisle with Forbes tomb a survivor from previous church on the spot, and some striking gravestones.

Alice McMurrough's work is an absolute treat.
I call it Therese's Revenge. (only my interpretation)

#ADoorAbleThursday from Tolquhon Castle (1580s), main door with wicket.

It’s doing well for poss being original door, though areas show clenched bolts passing through both skins. Inside face shows (AFAIK) v unusual joinery: back boards rest in dovetail recesses cut into front board. Skilled work.

Pellitory-of-the-wall has a long history at Tolquhon Castle, North Aberdeenshire, the first BSBI record being attributed to the Earl of Aberdeen in 1817. Took a bit of searching to find some yesterday as the ruins have mostly been cleansed of vegetation, but I'm pleased to say it is still there!

Two botanical highlights from a walk between Pitmedden and Tarves in North Aberdeenshire today: a large patch of common polypody on a wall-top refuge, sadly suffering from droughting; and dandelion leaves featuring in tile art at Tolquhon Gallery!
