#Tomistoma
(a soft-shell turtle, gharials still have a pretty reduced biting performance compared to all other crocodilians, like Tomistoma, pictured to the right cracking a hard-shelled Melanochelys)

Cranial anatomy of the Middle Eocene Egyptian crocodylian Herugavialis cairensis provides new insights into gavialoid diversity in the Mediterranean region
Abstract. Gavialoidea is presently composed of only two extant crocodylian species, the Indian gharial Gavialis gangeticus, and the false gharial Tomistoma

“The ancient reptile was identified in the historical records as belonging to the genus Tomistoma, the “false gharial.” The problem is that the only false gharials living today exist some 5,000 miles away, in the freshwaters of Malaysia and Indonesia.”

Morty, your species carved the Sphinx from the same rock as a 45-million-year-old croc, and both lost their noses. Its skull sat in a Stuttgart museum under the wrong name since 1927 until @ucl.ac.uk and pals CT-scanned it. A century of squinting and going "eh, close enough." day284.008

Honestly I suspect Purussaurus was also eating a lot of big aquatic animals. Also Sarcosuchus still has a proportionately more robust set of jaws than Tomistoma which can already kill larger land animals.

I labeled it as a gharial but it might actually be a false gharial

This is the same study that claimed Tomistoma could not death-roll despite there being footage f them death-rolling. And yes, I know tomistoma has a more robust skull than a gharial, but: Sarcosuchus has an even moire robust skull than a tomistoma at similar lengths, especially towards the front.
