Traces of Texas reader Charles Fairchild sent in this fantastic image of a Tonkawa Indian somewhere in north central Texas. The photo is undated but if I am not mistaken that is a Winchester model 1873 lever action rifle in his hands, which was first manufactured in 1866, so some time after that.

A Tonkawa village outside Fort Griffin, near Albany in Shackelford County, 1873. Fort Griffin existed from 1867-1879. The Tonkawas were friendly to Texas settlers and aided them in their struggle against the Comanches. From the Lawrence T. Jones III collection at SMU's Degolyer Library.

I'm thankful for the ancestors who preceded me, who lend me their resilience & bravery when I need it most. The Wichita, Tawakoni, Kiikaapoi, Jumanos, Tonkawa, Caddo, Comanche, Waco and many others. I remember & honor them as I gather with my indigenous family members today. We are still here.

Comanche Chief Iron Jacket (grandfather of Quanah Parker) was thought to be bulletproof because of the centuries old Conquistador armor he wore. Unfortunately, Jim Pockmark, a Tonkawa, killed him with a buffalo gun. Cormac McCarthy references Iron Jacket's armor in Blood Meridian

a Comanche and Apache man murdered by his neighbor on historic Coahuiltecan/Comanche/Apache/Tonkawa land (depending on time period) while protecting a husband who he previously described as “two spirited”

there is no way for hate to hurt just one group, because nobody has just one identity…
and it gets worse.

jonathan joss (john redcorn) was murdered in a hate crime at the site of their burned down home (from a suspected hate crime) while saving his husband's life.

It's so easy to imagine people like you in the 1850s, reading about the Tonkawa Massacre in Oklahoma and smugly remarking, "Well, the natives want to kill us, so..."
