Snapmaker's Kickstarter-smashing U1 3D printer lands at JB and Harvey Norman
3D printing is still one of the most futuristic technologies you can currently buy. And the market just got a bit bigger, with Snapmaker bringing its four toolhead 3D printer to Australia via JB Hi-Fi and Harvey Norman.
The Snapmaker U1 is a toolchanger, which takes a different approach to multi-colour printing than most of the 3D printers on the market.
Most multi-colour systems feed every filament through a single shared nozzle. Each colour change means unloading one filament, loading the next and purging the leftovers.
The U1 skips all that. It has four independent toolheads, and each colour or material stays loaded in its own one.
When a print calls for a different colour, the printer swaps the entire toolhead. Snapmaker calls this SnapSwap, and says a typical change takes about five seconds in its lab testing.
That approach should cut down on waste, too. Snapmaker claims the U1 produces up to 85 per cent less filament waste than shared-nozzle systems.
Four toolheads also means four different materials. You can mix rigid and flexible filaments in a single print, or load water-soluble supports for more complex designs.
The build volume is 270 x 270 x 270mm. Snapmaker has also added automatic calibration across all four toolheads, automated filament loading and print monitoring, to make toolchanging less intimidating for newcomers.
Snapmaker's Head of Global Go-to-Market, Sheila She, said the U1 was built to make this style of printing easier for everyone.
> "We designed the U1 to make multi-colour and multi-material printing faster, cleaner, and easier to use, while reducing the material waste commonly associated with filament changes."
The U1 already has plenty of fans. It became Kickstarter's most-funded 3D printer campaign last year, raising US$20.6 million from 20,680 backers.
