MY GRANDDAD DROVE A LORRY [no word yet about toolmaking]

this is the "I am relatable and just like you" because his granddad bought a house in 1950 when they cost about 3 quid and a pack of unfiltered ciggies

Pre-Homo sapiens hominids can't have had music as we understand it, but Tomlinson makes the case that stone toolmaking was a sequence of rhythmic actions, and selecting for brains and bodies that can process and participate in "beats" is the sine qua non of musicking

Hot or cold, wet or dry, underground or high up, humans have the flexibility to survive in all of those because we have a feedback loop between environment and tool-making. But you need the limbs to do toolmaking, and the capacity to move into niches where tools can be made.

The more I thought about it the more I'd actually say toolmaking would probably more accurate because you can have the best artist in the world but if you hand them badly made paint, badly made brushed and canvas the result will not be as good.

All the above things are an essential craft for art

I appreciate the madness of the attempts we all make to "fix" this though. There's no right answer, just perhaps better means to thread the needle.

I'm deep in the toolmaking furnace about this on a few projects. Gonna lose my whole mind trying to better target broad meaning with narrow purpose.

The ability to abstract sounds, and teach that abstraction, so that we can record things which don't require a mentor to impart/explain, requires toolmaking, of a durable sort.

There’s a particular kind of pride in fixing something users may never consciously notice.
A cleaner interaction.
One less click.
Better focus behavior.
A clearer failure state.
Good toolmaking includes work whose highest compliment is:
“I didn’t have to think about it.”
