Very glad to see a study on Oishinbo with a big emphasis on the manga! The politics are quite complicated with what I would label as a "decentralised neo-traditionalism" (which happily switch from liberal to more conservative depending on the context, when it comes to society and economy).

Term traditionalism. Catholic traditionalism, which is defined by opposition to Vatican II is in no way related to perennial traditionalism, which is universalist esoteric mysticism, occultism, and racism that promotes pagan faiths as more legitimate than Christian ones because they are older.

Also this does confirm what I already suspected, my family knows I’m doing this stuff and are just dead silent about it because immigration clean slices through everything else in terms of their traditionalism. What are they going to tell me? Stop? lol

Definitely the case that men are more likely to be at the high end of gender traditionalism than women, but I would have expected the gendered appeal of the far right to pertain more to men than to women.

Spent waaay too long coding whether each party in the ESS was considered to be right-wing populist, and the results are suprising. Not that there's a strong relationship between gender traditionalism and voting for a RWP party, but that the relationship is the same for both men and women.

tbh i do find it interesting that JRM's catholicism just. very obviously makes his general tradness hit a bit of a discordant note in the symphony of british traditionalism

I think the mindset is stupid in itself.
Everything exemplifies adaptation and open mindedness as being survivalist traits while stubbornness and traditionalism lead to disaster and failure.
Be it military command, political philosophy, education, or evolution.
