#Transcoding
My buddy @bearnardvt.bsky.social helped figure out that twitch A) restricts 1440p streams in certain countries, and also B) doesn't allow impacted viewers to change the resolution unless the streamer is a partner/affiliate with transcoding. Had to restart stream to change to 1080p...

Let me know if u run into any trouble. I used it a lot years ago transcoding audio downloads, it's pretty much all you need for your sort of use case. I don't think there's a gui available but the cmd syntax is straightforward.

I've got an HPE Microserver doing about this duty now, and it works and is well-designed, but it's CPU (an older Opteron) is woefully underpowered and doesn't help much with video transcoding.

I'm curious to see how it works out.

What do you use for cloud replication?

Just treated the same as a usb drive. So I'm going to add syncing and some UI for space allocation. This one can handle FLAC etc but I'll need to add transcoding and some filename restriction options for others.

Hi! Sorry you had some problems with it, I’ve known people using all browsers decently.

Ethernet will have been the main fix by the sounds of what you did, especially if the bitrate was high as we don’t have transcoding yet.

Free VPNs can have speed limits, so that could have also affected it.

The good news: I'm finally able to rip 4K Blu-rays for the media server.

The bad news: lol 80GB movie. Guess it's time for me to read up on transcoding.

The issues with a jellyfin or plex server go beyond the fact that storage has become unaffordable. I know we all hate discs and there's good reason to BUT people chasing after the best non transcoding streamer after they've set up all of this could have literally just bought a Blu-ray player.

Jellyfin is great for videos, a bit messy for songs. Works wonders over LAN, or behind a VPN with limited bitrate (provided you have good hardware for transcoding, or it will buffer for minutes).

Allow me to be a bit weird: are we so sure that generating that text on-device uses meaningfully more energy than the phone already spent capturing the photo, or what the server spends transcoding and vending it to every feed it lands in? Is it not strange to put an energy budget on this, only?

- Xeon E-2274G. Yes, with iGPU. "Nice!", I thought to myself, I'll be able to run hardware transcoding, but...
- PowerEdge R240. Yep, with C242 chipset, that doesn't support igpu.
- 32GB ddr4. Yep, this is 2026 and we pack up everything nice and tight, with zram swap.

If it ain't broke... honestly if you aren't gaming (or doing a lot of transcoding/high resolution video output) you barely need a video card these days

It does not like the fact that I am trying to watch a 4K film without hardware transcoding (yet, just work i haven't done yet) and stopping every few seconds :(

Not according to Gemini.. Standard downstream video processing—such as MP4 re-encoding, compression, transcoding, downscaling, or CDN hosting—cannot generate or create a SynthID watermark.

Lambda Managed Instances can now run asynchronous and event source mapping invocations for up to 90 minutes. Synchronous invocations remain capped at 15 minutes. A useful change for longer jobs like media transcoding.

I was looking at buying a new NAS, but determined it'd probably be cheapest and easiest to just slap my old 5800X3D+64gigs of DDR4+2080Ti into a new case. It's gonna be a monster but I'm sure I'll figure out some bullshit besides video transcoding I can use all that power for
September 25, 2026 at 11:00 PM
I run Unraid on my machine because it can be run form a USB stick as well.

You can probably find a cheapish server out there as you don’t need much and start even with cheap refurb 250GB drives.

One with Intel Quicksync, you don’t need a GPU for transcoding but even a GT710 will do fine.

JPEG XL is upon us 🚀

Chrome v155 will enable it by default:

chromestatus.com/feature/5114...

Safari has had partial support since 2023. I'm guessing @firefox.com is not that far off.

transcoding transcoded movies

@EdwinG

It's still transcoding to h.264? I was shocked Mastodon was doing that a year or year and a half ago, and figured they would have fixed it before now...

All these bits wasted, like tears in rain.
