Well, yeah - some monastic orders were (are! e.g. Trappists, who are an early modern order) completely silent, but others required silence in specific places or times.
But you might still need to eat, so you needed a standard sign for bread!

On this day in 1944, a 32 year old Dutch Jewish Trappist nun perished. From a devout Catholic family, her 4 brothers and 2 sisters (5 of which were Trappists including her twin sister) all perished in Auschwitz and Buchenwald. One sister survived. Her name was Louise Löb

Seriously -- wear a robe and draw pictures and do meditative contemplation and sing with buddies and make beer sounds like a seriously great life
When I was a very little kid, I wanted to be a monk when I grew up. Just wearing robes, singing with friends, drawing weird little guys. I was so disappointed when I found out about the whole “must be male” and “religious” aspects of it 😞

I spent the week at a residency for feminist artists on the grounds of a community of nuns quietly working for peace and justice and now I would very much like them to be as celebrated in the region as the Trappists who make the good fudge are.
