So, I don't know if I have any young (or not so young, indeed!) women following me thinking about taking up travel by themselves, but here's a rule: you don't say exactly where you are or where you're going online, not until you're gone or about to leave the place. #TravelRamblings #SoloTravel
All shall be revealed in due time!

There's no direct flight from London to Yerevan, WHY 😭 #TravelRamblings

I've been wanting o come back to my #TravelRamblings and #FoodRamblings all day, but many adulting. So job. Very manager. Wow.
Seeing Kavey's wonderful food adventures in the Basque country has me stewing #TravelRamblings/#FoodRamblings. That region is a very food-intense destination, & many travel shows have highlighted it the past 15 years or so. But you know what's my _other_ favorite "food lover's dream" area in Spain?

Found some #TravelRamblings from early Bsky times while trying to find something else. Smiling at the recollections.
Erlian is a bleak border town in the vastness of Inner Mongolia, where the train from Beijing in China to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia must stop for hours because the tracks have different widths and the bogies have to be changed.

It's pretty insane that a 4 day trip to either Nashville or Denver (flight + hotel) would set me back around $2300, when I could go to Santiago de Chile for 9 days for $1100 (10.5+ h flight) or to Rome for 9 days for $1600 (8+ h flight). #TravelRamblings

I should tell 🦋 one little anecdote from Donostia (Spanish name "San Sebastián) that is actually one of my very favorite interactions in +20 years of solo travel. #FoodRamblings #TravelRamblings
The restaurant is probably great, just seeing this and the name are good pointers (a "zurito" is a short glass of beer typical in the Basque country). And Donostia is... Wow. My useless reflections on it.

I remember the good old days when flights were not always and inevitably fully booked. A Tuesday flight in the middle of a normal week would have been a 60-80%er before the pandemic. #TravelRamblings

Slovenia is stunning. Pro tip: go to lake Bohinj when you arrive at Bled and realize it's teeming with Instagrammers nowadays. Trust me on this one (and I've only been to Slovenia in pre social media times!!) #TravelRamblings
Gorgeous Lake Bled, Slovenia #travelsky

15 years of food & travel shows and easier travel options have put the Basque country, a very food-intense destination, in the map for a wider audience of visitors. I love it, but my *other* favorite food lover's dream area in Spain remains less known internationally. #FoodRamblings #TravelRamblings

Sorry, #TravelRamblings à propos of nothing. I once arrived in Helsinki in pre smartphone days and realized I didn't have the name & address of my hostel (o ruin and misery). I took a free map, a bus downtown, and walked to every hostel, asking if they had me on a booking.
I found it past midnight.

Bonus tweet: Unsurprisingly, everybody in Georgia (where Stalin was from) insisted that I must be Georgian, and they thought I was pulling their leg when all I answered back was "Sorry, I don't speak Georgian" (in Russian). #TravelRamblings

I'd been wanting to make a version of it since the summer, when I finally could tick off having cake at Café Gerbeaud in Budapest. I had been to Buda as a penniless student in 2002 & couldn't afford the treat then. #TravelRamblings

(Russian long distance trains have a boiler at the end of the car. I survived the last brutal 12 hours or so of the 42-h leg out of Siberia by getting up for scalding water every 20 min. #TravelRamblings)

I didn't take it. I'd rather fight a bull (and I *hate* the fiesta nacional) than contribute to Stalin's estate in any way. My first Russian host was a babushka who spent years in a gulag as a child. But that is another story and shall be told another time. #TravelRamblings #BecauseRussia

I know nothing about Anatolian psychedelic rock, but Turkish death metal is pretty great, try a few bands if you haven't. And I was so pleasantly surprised by the warm rock/metal scene in Istanbul. Truly one of the most surprising cities I've been too. #TravelRamblings #MetalSky

Considering potential destinations from London or Manchester. Something that's not terribly difficult to get back to the States from (after missing my connection in Rabat last January, I'm not keen on trying any more dodgy layovers for a while). #TravelRamblings

Some #TravelRamblings a propos of this. I have crossed Russia, an authoritarian country with a criminal president, with my broken Russian, and never once did I fear anything nefarious *from the locals*. It wasn't even a consideration. +
This is amazing, and it looks a lot like a few itineraries I have had in mind. In my case, it's not Amtrak fucking up that concerns me, but my desired stops; I'm alone, and having an accent is a big problem nowadays in this country.

This area is also the birthplace of flamenco as we know it, and this is where the first protodemocratic constitution of Europe was signed. It's an area extremely rich with history and tradition, on top of the amazing food. It should be more popular internationally. #TravelRamblings

I think what she meant in her broken English was "Why [doesn't it fit?] You're *NOT* so fat!". Because I really wasn't then, although I thought otherwise. And now, every time I think of food (which is... all the time) I hear her WHY SO FAT? in my head. #TravelRamblings #WhySoFat

It's a dish of whole chicken pieces browned and stewed in a garlic cream sauce, and my favorite thing I ate in Georgia. And the most elusive, too, since the first restaurant I tried refused to serve it to me on the basis of being by myself. #FoodRamblings #TravelRamblings

And my time is running out, and I need to do and see the things I want while my legs still can carry me and my backpack. But, let me tell you: it's a lot scarier to travel solo in public transit in the US of A (with every advantage on my side, on paper) than in the arse of Siberia. #TravelRamblings
