A full-page vintage Trans World Airlines (TWA) advertisement, printed primarily in black, white, and red, promoting the airline's domestic service in the United States. A memory of cold for #travelthursday and this is the Sólheimajökull glacier in southern Iceland which we visited in 2018. We've seen glaciers in four countries across three continents now. Catch 'em while you can.

It's early evening on a clear, cold day with a sky only maintaining the slightest hint of blue as it pales to white with the onset of sunset out of view. We're looking across a rough landscape of dark rocky sand and boulders to a glacial lake formed from the glacier at the end of it, a few hundred metres away. Warmer tones of rock rise up to the left in a hill hugging the glacier but the darker forms are present elsewhere including to the distance on the right. There are ten people on the rocky land sloping to the still water's edge in front of us, with everyone wearing thick winter coats and most wearing hats too. The four people furthest down the slope are heading towards us and all have blue helmets on suggesting they've been rock-climbing. The other people, like us, are enjoying the landscape, particularly the glacier which is what we're here for. It's wide, stretching the entire width of the shallow valley, and looks low from this distance although it's probably around thirty metres high where its jagged blue-white and black edge meets the water, rising slowly as the glacier disappears into the gap between the hills on the left and mountains far off to the right.

It's a practically cloudless day and we're at a fairly high altitude up a mountain so the sky is not just blue but crisp and clear too with the thin atmosphere. It feels hot here under the blazing sun on a small area of flat, dusty ground that drops away a few metres in front of us. Some ground rises to the right and bushes and grass grow on it, vibrant and green. A few small conifer trees are just over the lip of land in front of us, none of their tops reaching past our head, and none spoiling the view across the distant and increasingly hazy landscapes that fill the space to the horizon. We're gazing out at a flat landscape for the first few dozens of kilometres before a ridge of hills and mountains rise up to form a barrier. A thick streamer of cloud lies in the wide valley ahead of us but towering over it towards the right there's the rising form of a volcano, its top a slightly chopped-off, wide, triangular peak.

It feels like late summer, late in the afternoon, and we're standing on a low bridge crossing a canal in a city. The water stretches out ahead of us, wide, dark, barely rippled, and reflecting the scene above and either side. High walls line the canal and there are small boats tied up against both walls all the way down the water's edges. Narrow roads run alongside both sides of the canal with trees spaced along both edges overhanging the water and tall, narrow houses set back from them. On the right side there are many bikes parked up while cars dominate the parking on the left. The sky is mostly blue above but there are patchy clouds too and the sun is somewhere to the left of us. The left side of the canal is in shade while the right side is bright but not quite in full sunshine suggesting the sun may be partly obscured by light cloud. It's quiet and peaceful.

A portrait-orientation shot of a tall building on one side of a public square. It's a bright, sunny day with not a cloud in the deep blue sky and the white stonework of the square and the building shine. The building has three main storeys along its length, each of them high, but we're looking at the central section of this city hall where it extends up one more storey with three rooms width, then has a tower above that topped with a metallic bronze tiled dome and clock face. The lowest storey has an arcade of arches, the widest middle one of which has rainbow-coloured floral decorations at the base of the columns. Above that centre arch there's a tall arched window that extends up the two storeys over it. Windows on the first floor are arched while those above that are simpler rectangular forms. Four statues of female figures decorate the uppermost floor just below the tower.

It's a grey day with a lot of distant fog smothering any distant views. We're on a grassy area dotted with some flat stones at ground level marking where walls once stood and, just behind, a round-walled structure. The building is about three metres high and dozens wide, although we can only see a small part of it here, and has a small window gap in the curved wall. The wall itself is built up from roughly squared-off stones of varying sizes, closely compacted together with small tufts of grass and moss growing in the tight cracks. It feels quiet, cool, a little damp in the air, and with a still sense of history.

A portrait orientation shot taken on a bright, sunny, almost cloudless day. We're in a narrow street, little more than an alley really, in a medieval town. Pale stone walls either side make up flat-fronted houses. The wall on the left drops down in steps towards a junction just ahead of this alley that curves slightly left then meets a fractionally wider pedestrian thoroughfare that heads right past the end of the wall on the right and behind the wall on our left. A couple of people are at the junction heading right. The sky is deep blue and the sun is high overhead as evidenced by the short shadow cast by the wall on the left that only reaches a little way into this narrow street. It feels warm and quiet.

We're on a cruise ship sailing down a fjord in Norway which stretches a little ahead of us and curves to the right behind a sheer, craggy, dark rock face. We're on the balcony of a cabin on one of the uppermost decks of the ship, on the starboard side and near the front. We can't see any of our cabin or balcony here but a dozen metres in front of us emerging from the left side we can see the wing of the ship's bridge which juts out either side of the ship to aid with manoeuvring at docks. The bridge is a white metal-framed room with a supporting beam angled at the bottom back towards the ship and with full length clear windows all around. We can't see anyone in it but there are some consoles visible. On top of the bridge there is a viewing area with railings around and a dozen people are standing on top, some just looking around at the views, some with cameras in hand, everyone with coats on but with hoods down. It's chilly, especially when the ship is moving. The rocky fjord wall on the right has a deep cleft running down it, dark with shadows, and there are bushes clinging to the less sheer faces, especially lower down. Ahead of the ship the far side of the fjord wall is curving around in front under a cooling evening sky and we can just make out patches of snow and ice on the highest ground.

We're on a bus driving along a long pier towards shore, looking out of the window on the left at a curving, shallow beach, so shallow that almost a hundred metres of sand is still wet from the receding tide and is reflecting the skyline of a small city beyond it. The sky is blue with a few clouds and the city is a jagged line of apartment blocks and trees set back from the sea by a wide promenade. A low barrier with wire fencing runs along the side of the pier offering limited protection from the edge of it as we trundle along towards land. It looks warm out there with light that suggests early morning so plenty of opportunity to get warmer still.

A portrait shot. An evening view on a cool, flat, dark green lake. The sky is pale blue, largely covered by light grey clouds, their undersides lit gently from the low sun somewhere out of sight. Across the rippled water's surface we're looking towards a low stone bank lined with trees, thin-trunked but with masses of leaves in dark greens, olive greens, and red-greens that suggest autumn. A marble bridge connects the stone banks and is our main focus. It has a single arch but it's very high in the centre compared to the overall length of the structure. Stone railings on the bridge's span are either side of a narrow space for pedestrians to cross the bridge although it's a steep climb either side. It's very quiet, peaceful, relaxing, with a small chill in the air as the day's warmth disappears.

We've been planning today for our #Norway trip in a few months. Lots of new ports to see and we'll be making a return to #bergen for the first time since 2013. The aquarium and the vinyl store that's also a bar are on the list.

A very overcast day. We're standing beside the water at one end of a harbour. The water is flat, barely even rippling, reflecting the cloud cover like a sheet of mercury. A long, three-storey building with steep, red-tiled roof stretches from the right out along the harbour edge. It has covered balconies on its upper floors and signage that indicates it is a fish restaurant and bar in Norwegian. White tyres line the harbour edge below the building indicating where boats may moor alongside. Only one small boat is present at the end of the pier-like structure. More buildings and typical items found in a harbour can be seen further off in the distance. It feels cool, still, and quiet.

It's night and we're standing on the promenade deck of a cruise deck that's docked beside a somewhat industrial port. Part of the promenade railing can be seen as well as the white, plastic undersides of lifeboats and tender boats extending out a little way over our heads. We're looking at a large, wide, concrete dock extending out from the mainland. A row of tall lights with warm glows line the far side of the dock but there's very little else there. Yellow markings are along the nearside of the dock and we can just see the end of a gangway reaching from the ship to the concrete. At the bottom of it are a few people in security uniforms and there's a white police car and officer standing around too. It feels quiet, and there's a sense that the people at the bottom of the gangway are waiting for some final people to arrive and board, and they may be in the single car in the distance coming down the far side of the dock with its lights on. Some mobile heavy lifting rigs are stationed in the distance down the dock and there are distant lights of the nearby city beyond that.

A portrait orientation shot taken from a sloping grassy back set back a little way from a river. It's a bright sunny day but we can't see much of the surrounding because a large tree trunk close to us blocks the right half of view, while a second tree trunk is a bit further away. The nearest trunk has its upper half in shadow from the thin canopy of leaves above but the lower part of the tree is in sunshine showing off a thick coat of yellow-green lichen. The tree further away also seems to have lichen on its lower part but its more notable feature is the bend in the trunk which seems to arch towards the river lower down then bends back away further up forming a long S shape. Branches spread off it higher up and a light scattering of green leaves dapple the blue sky behind.
