Curious about who in the #EuropeanParliament is driving (or blocking) the EU #Treatychange (reform)? Together with @karolinaboronska.bsky.social, we’ve just published a new open-access article in #WestEuropeanPolitics. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

But we need Europe to concern itself with these important issues. And the answer cannot be found in 27 member unanimity. We need to un-Brexit Europe and give all of us a real voice by uniting. Federally. Now. #eupol #treatychange

The fact that, in 14 years, passerelle clauses have never been used is a clear indication that the issue is not treaty change (which pass. clauses avoid), but really Member States' approval (which pass. clauses require).

Since you support EU #Ability2Act, @akk, will you support an integrated and operational #EUarmy? More broadly, will you support #treatychange and the end of unanimity at @EUCouncil? Will you push for true #EuropeanParties and a political Europe?

Very disappointing position of @EUCouncil on Conf. on the #FutureofEurope. Not only does it limit itself to policy, but it ends by flatly rejecting #treatychange. #CoFoE
@EPP, @TheProgressives and @RenewEurope, these national leaders are in your parties!

While increasing the #EU's powers to face health crises surely is important, let's hope that a two-year conference will indeed touch upon strengthening our European democracy and listening to citizens. #FutureOfEurope #treatychange

“Europe has to get used to wielding power itself” Yes, but then Member States must give that power to democratic EU institutions, and not expect to keep it in 28 separate hands. #TreatyChange must shift relevant national power to the EU level.

The inability of the #EUCouncil to efficiently address any of the recent crises (#financial, #climate, #migration) and to see past its own interest and power is grounds enough for #treatychange. People - and not States - must be at the heart of #Europe. #IamEuropean

"Some argued that it would only make sense for the #EUCouncil to have a leading role". This is why we need #treatychange: because the Council, crippled by unanimity, still tries to lead everywhere. A #europeandemocracy needs a #EuropeanConstitution and the Parliament at its core.

" 'No treaty changes' was supported by almost everyone, except France and Germany" at EU ambassadors' meeting.
Because of course Member States oppose #treatychange which would undoubtedly shift power to #EUParliament. Such short-sightedness! #IamEuropean

In 1787, Charles Pinckney of #SouthCarolina had concluded that the "depressed situation of the union is undoubtedly owing" to this "absurd" requirement of unanimous consent for amendments. Sounds familiar? #EUreform #TreatyChange #EUisthenewUS
