and sat there many nights wondering what went wrong, only to have people do things that show me that the trivial things aren't a true reflection of how people see me. I am somebody and people do want to uplift me and recognise that I mean well despite not always saying the right thing. I'm so lucky.

Not even true. Gyms have been around, in one form or another, since at least the Ancient Greeks. Got properly popular in the 1800s to train soldiers. There was a gym on the Titanic FFS.
