Here is a fun photo of a cicada shell for #TrueBugTuesday. You can make a photo like this by backlighting the shell with a large diffuse flash.

How about a fancy jewel bug for #TrueBugTuesday? While this one has muted coloring, many jewel bugs are brilliantly colored, with a wide range of iridescent metallic hues.

When I found this insect in the summer of 2023 I called it the most adorable thing I'd ever seen. Not everyone agreed with me. BUT, it's a teeny, tiny, baby assassin bug and I still this it's super cute. (Sinea sp.) Pennsylvania #Inverts

Snoots checking in for #TrueBugTuesday

The Partridge Planthopper can be found sporadically in most of the eastern US east of the Rocky Mountains. Even though this insect has a common name, there isn't much info about them. #inverts

Red-banded Leafhoppers drink lots of sap and produce lots of waste fluid. They launch the fluid away from themselves and an interesting study showed that they use the surface tension of the droplet like a spring to launch droplets further. 🤓

How about a parade of colorful leafhoppers? These insects are in the order Hemiptera, commonly called true bugs. A key characteristic of the order is having piercing-sucking mouthparts and leafhoppers use this built-in straw to drink plant sap. #TrueBugTuesday

I’ve observed the whole life cycle of these hibiscus harlequin bugs over the last two years but first time seeing this pale coloured juvenile.
