Dirt Daubers are a type of wasp that are masters of ceramics IMO. They build amazing "pipe" nests. There is much lore about using dirt from their nests, from healing to hexing, luck for money, and even healing a broken marriage. #MythologyMonday #witchsky #folkwitch

Busy wasp moms 🌿
A dark-colored wasp (Trypoxylon sp.?) with white back feet and blue-purple iridescent wings clutches a small ball of dirt in her front legs. Another, slightly smaller wasp (Trypoxylon different sp.?) with two rufous bands around her abdomen gathers dirt. This must be where the very best dirt is, because they've dug out little mines on this side. One of the larger Trypoxylons is inside the jagged hole, working away. A black wasp with yellow abdominal bands and other markings gathering dirt. A potter or mason wasp?

Trypoxylon collinum (Crabronidae) at my insect hotel. Males stay and guard the nest, females collect spiders for the kids to eat. They really seem to like stems of swamp milkweed. 🌿

Nest of an organ pipe mud dauber wasp (Trypoxylon politum). Look closely! This wasp lays its eggs within narrow cavities constructed of mud, it then fills each cavity with paralysed spiders and lays an egg. When the eggs hatch, the larva have a meal waiting!

I finally cleaned out my insect hotels last week, a process that allows me to remove invasive parasites such as Houdini flies. On left are cocoons of Trypoxylon collinum, a small wasp that provisions nests with spiders. On right are cocoons of Osmia georgica (a mason bee). #insects #bees #wasps
